How do we play?

Eurogames at the Royal Standard is all about good fun. All are welcome.  If you're a really hardcore gamer or you're ultra-competitive, however, this might not scratch your itch; we strongly encourage beginners as well as seasoned gamers who like to teach. Bring your favourite strategy game or join a table and learn a new one.

What are these 'eurogames' we play?

We are open to all sorts of strategy games, but these nights focus particularly on the German- or European-style designer strategy games—'Eurogames' for short.

Eurogames are family board games that emphasize strategy, play down luck, lean towards economic and historical rather than military themes, and usually wrap up in about an hour or two. A hallmark of these games is that you don't need to eliminate the other players to win and you get to do interesting stuff even when it's not your turn.

You might find yourself in a fast-paced auction bidding for stocks in an American railway company, or building a power grid across China, or playing cards to forge your galactic empire, or attracting great thinkers to your palace in Renaissance Italy, or ploughing a field in 17th century Germany, or hammering out a trade deal as you settle the island of Catan, or defending your dynasty in ancient Mesopotamia, or co-operating to manage a deadly pandemic, or rigging elections in revolutionary France, or setting up a wine business in Portugal... and so much more!!!

For more information on individual games—including photographs, discussions, videos, reviews and more—visit http://www.boardgamegeek.com/

I don’t have any Eurogames, can I still play?

Abso-bloody-lutely! There are usually more than a dozen games on any given night, and we encourage experienced board game geeks to teach and make newcomers feel warmly welcome.

That said, we heartily encourage you to bring your own games along. The success of these nights depends on the generosity of people sharing their collections. The more who share, the less wear and tear.

Games you won't see.

We sometimes play a lightish wargame or something with zombies in it, but please—no Monopoly, Jenga, Risk, Cranium, Hungry Hungry Hippos, or the like. For lighter, party games, we heartily recommend Cafe Games, but you're more than welcome to come along to both! Sorry all you Level 17 elves, but don't do role-playing games either.

Who comes along?

We're a merry, cosmopolitan little crowd of lads and lasses, ladies and gents. We hail from Ol' Blighty, Malaysia, Germany, France, Spain, Mexico, Canada, India, Switzerland, the US of A, Singapore, Venezuela, China, North Fitzroy and even further than that!

Board game etiquette—keeping the games (and your karma) in good nick.

Here are a few simple guidelines to remember when playing board games. It's all about keeping the games in good condition, having a good time, and not annoying your fellow players.

* Please keep your hands reasonably clean whilst playing the games—greasy, sticky fingers and expensive board games don’t mix!

* By all means, enjoy some pub nosh and a drinky or two with the game, but please take care to avoid spillages. Be especially mindful of wonky tables and people who like to gesticulate wildly when they win or lose! (You know who you are.)

* Try to focus on the game. Put the mobile phone to one side for the night. Better still, switch it off! If you really have to take a call, excuse yourself for a short while.

* When it's not your turn, use the time to plan your next move. This helps for a swifter game for everyone.

* Emergencies notwithstanding, once you've committed to a game, stick with it until the end. Leaving part-way through can seriously unbalance a game.

* Pay attention when the rules are being explained. We also miss a point here or there; save your questions until the person explaining the rules is finished.

* Try to avoid bending cards! (I know, I know, bending helps your thinking, right?)

* Once the game is done, offer to lend a hand to pack up. Check the floor for components lest they're vacuumed up and lost forever.

* Put the pretty components back into the box how you found them.

* If you don't like a game, don't complain; just don't play it again.

* Relax. Be of good humour. It's only a game.

Support the pub that supports you!

Eurogames Nights at the Royal Standard isn’t a club and there are no fees. We hope you'll help to keep us sweet with the publican and at least buy a beer, wine, soft drink or cuppa, and chip in for a snack, or enjoy a counter meal. (See guidelines about board-gaming etiquette below.)

Hope SOMEONE will comment or at least play them with me. 011 (Therion011), Merchants & Marauders, Castles of Burgundy; Phoenicia, Amun-Re, Rio de la Plata & Isla Dorada. This week, I shall be bringing along the newly acquired Space Cadets, a cooperative game of space adventure where each player takes on control of one or two systems of a space ship (think Star Trek bridge).

Probably not a game for strategy junkies, each system is "controlled" via a 30 second minigame; shape-matching, number puzzles and disc flicking are just a few examples. The effects of these games guide the ship towards a certain goal, depending on which mission has been selected.

Cadet Nic already reserved himself a spot on the bridge (was that with your +1, Nic ?) so I'll be recruiting 2-3 more willing cadets on the night. I'll quite happily run the game 2-3 times over the evening (playtime is ~1 hour) so if people want to rotate in and out, or have multiple missions, that's all good with me.

Teaching should be quite easy, each function only has a few rules you need to KNOW, so hope to get up and running not long after our 6pm blast off.

    June 12, 2013

    • Ben

Should be there for 6pm, and I'm counting myself, Nic, Ian and Christian so far (for 4 players) and hoping to pick up one more recruit on the night. (or two, if we must, but I suspect this game's sweet spot is five players)

Ben, I am going to have to stay back. Don't wait for me. Should I not be court-marshalled for being AWOL, I will see if i can come later.

Hi everyone, I will be bringing Pandemic (I have a unique expansion for that game), Seasons, 7 Wonders (just got the latest expansion for it) and Fresco. I will be happy to teach these games if anyone is interested in playing these games.

    June 19, 2013

    • Darren P.

Hey Jonathan. Thanks fur offer to teach so sign me up for either of these games. I've heard only good things about them. Cheers, Darren

I'm new to this group and haven't played for many years. I hope someone can help me jog my memory on the rules of Settlers of Catan, Caracassonne or whatever is around. I've got the German version of the Settlers of Catan with multiple add ons and the German version of Risk. Not sure if that's of any use to the group but if it is I'm happy to bring those games along. Looking forward to it!

    June 18, 2013

    • Nic

Thanks David. Yes, I'll be there from 6pm and bring my Settlers game along; the expansions I've got are seafarers, cities & knights (my favourite) and the standard for 5-6 players.

      June 18, 2013

    • David

Hi Nic, I am looking forward to joining in on a game of your German edition of Settlers of Catan. I have not played the game in a while now, but I still just remember how to play just. Here is hoping I do not end up with too many sheep, blah! Ha!

      June 19, 2013

  • Aaron L.

I'll be bringing Endeavour, Glen More, Guildhall, Copycat and Fleet.

    June 19, 2013

I shall bing along the copy of "Small World" which had been left behind at a Eurogames night a couple of months ago that I had received a reply message back before from the owner of but has not been claimed so far, cheers :)

    June 18, 2013

  • David

I shall bring along with me a copy of a boardgame that had been left behind at one of our recent Eurogames nights. If indeed you have left behind one of your games recently please let me know which one it was and I can then re unite with your game :)

    June 18, 2013

    • Jules

Hi David-- can you please name the game that was left behind as it helps people remember. I'm sure no-one is dishonest enough to claim a game that isn't theirs :-)

      June 18, 2013

    • David

Hi Jules, yes I can name the game it is "Small World".

      June 18, 2013

Anyone bringing power grid wouldn't mind giving that another shot, have only played it once

    June 17, 2013

  • Mark

Thinking of bringing Mice and Mystics or Last Night on Earth. Any takers?

    June 16, 2013

    • Ben

If I didn't have my new copy of Space Cadets, I'd certainly join you for either. Not played Mice and Mystics, but generally love anything by Plaid Hat games.

Michael says he'll bring Stuart's copy of LoW and Ian's copy of Kings of Tokyo. He wasn't at the last meeting Stuart which is why it hasn't surfaced until now :-)

    2 · June 16, 2013

    • Stuart

I shall make sure that I make an appearance. Might be around 10pm, though (the dinner's in Richmond) depending on when we finish up.

      June 16, 2013

    • Ian

Excellent, was about to ask about King of Tokyo. I'll be there!

      June 17, 2013

  • Mark B.

Will now be in Sydney for a last minute meeting. Giving up my place for Wed and will catch-up with you guys in a fortnight. Later, M

  • Warrick W.

Sorry - hope someone is happy to have my place.Smith st trams will be stuffed that night with road works

    June 16, 2013

  • Stuart

Oops, I have a friend's birthday dinner that night. I'll swing by afterwards to pick up LoW and/or say g'day, but there won't be time to actually play anything, I suspect.

    June 15, 2013

  • Jason

I'll be bringing Forbidden Island along for anyone who wants to play, very similar mechanics to Pandemic. Plus I'll also be hunting for my favourites.

    June 12, 2013

  • Stuart

One small request, please. Could whoever has my copy of Lords of Waterdeep from four weeks prior to this one please bring it along to this one? It would be very much appreciated. (I don't mind leaving games behind if people are playing it/them, but I would like to have it/them back at some point, preferably sooner rather than later.)

    June 11, 2013

    • Ben

Sorry Stuart, I know you left me with that role, which I then had to hastily handball off to Michael (apologies to him too for that) when needed to leave early. If I'd known last session, I'd have helped track it down; hopefully we can at the very least confirm it's existence by next week, if not actually have it back in your hands !

      June 12, 2013

    • Stuart

It's all good, mate, don't stress - as long as I have a vague idea of where it is and when to expect it, I'm not overly stressed. Next time I'll leave my phone number with the players to pass onto the lucky collector so we can organise the pickup. Live and learn, and I'm not having a dig at anybody. Seriously. It's all about having fun, right? :)

      June 12, 2013

  • Hilary C.

Great session. Big thanks to Todd for your patience in teaching the expansions to Catan

    June 8, 2013

  • Martina

Miss playing the games!!! Can't wait to start playing again...
