The Justice System

Some background on theories of punishment:

Discussion sub-topics:

Is the goal of prison to remove criminals from society? Or is it to punish them?
Should prisoners be allowed to live fulfilling lives in prison? Or should prison be unpleasant by definition?
Is the fact that our prisons are extremely dangerous a bad thing? Or a good thing?

Should ex-felons be allowed to vote?
Should current felons be allowed to vote?
Should ex-felons be allowed all rights of normal citizens? The right to have a firearm?
Should sex offenders ever be allowed back into society? Under what conditions?

Should "victimless crimes" like drug use, and prostitution be legalized?
Should we execute people for committing the most terrible crimes?
Is it possible to effectively prevent mistaken executions?

Hypothetical question *partially* explored in the short story and it's film adaptation "Minority Report":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minority_Report_%28film%29
*IF* we could know for certain in advance whether someone was going to commit a crime should we stop them?
Should they still be punished?
Does it matter if we catch them in the act, 1 week before, or 1 decade before they commit the act?
