Paddle to Shoshone Falls from Centennial Park in Twin Falls

Supposed to be 88* and partly cloudy on Saturday.  Let's hope this holds out!

Please be at Albertson's on Federal Way no later than 8am on Saturday the 31st.  We will meet at the southwest corner of the lot near the McDonalds.  I (James) drive a 4 door red Toyota pickup and plan to be there by 7:50.

What to bring: "flat water" boat, paddle, pump(if needed), Life jacket (mandatory), plenty of drinking water (we will be in the sun, paddling for 4-6 hours), lunch, snacks, sturdy shoes for portaging, waterproof camera, sunscreen,  money for gas, money for dinner in Twin, plus anything else you think you might need and can fit inside your boat with you.

(Since we are using Boise Area Paddler's MeetUp Group to organize this float, please respect their rule of always wearing your life jacket when on the water. )

We will arrange carpools at 8 and aim to leave by 8:15 with a 2 hour drive.

We will start the float at Centennial Park in Twin Falls between 10:30 and 11, paddling upstream to the portage around Pillar Falls (1.5 miles).

At this point we’ll stop and eat lunch before continuing upstream to Shoshone Falls (1.5 more miles).

The paddle is 6 miles round trip and will make for a full day (4-6 hours). A dinner stop in Twin Falls is usually in order after the boats are back on the cars.  I would estimate that we are back between 8 and 9pm.

In the event of inclement weather, this trip may be rescheduled.

Wow! Great pics! Looks like a blast! I'd like to do this on my paddle board. Doable? Strong current? Strenuous b/c of distance? Any info would be great!

Strenuous for someone who isn't very experienced.

    May 31, 2014

    • Darryl G.

I think you did great Stone, it is never easy to start a new exercise program but once you get going it does get easier. I don't think you could pick a more pleasing and calming past time than kayaking. Getting a great workout surrounded by natures beauty is jut a +1.

Ha, Sue, I lead the pack because I took a head start every time! And Darryl, thanks. It was a great time with WONDERFUL people!

Great temp and the cloud cover kept me from becoming a lobster.

Thanks, James for leading this great trip. It was a very enjoyable day all around from the scenery, the excitement of being so near the falls and the great company. Thanks again for doing the hard work of schlepping the boats!

    2 · May 31, 2014

    • James R.

That was a fun trip. Luckily Mike, Darryl, and Ron schlepped the boats as well. I'm a bit sore and a bit sun burnt on the shoulders, but it was a great trip. Thanks everyone for the company. :-)

Thank you to everyone who is volunteering to drive. We will get carpools figured out when we meet Saturday morning. Nobody who wants to carpool will be left out, I promise!

    1 · May 29, 2014

  • Ron

Looks like it should be a great trip. If anyone needs/ wants to carpool, I have room for 3 or 4 and plenty of room for boats.

    1 · May 27, 2014

    • Sue

I have a 13' foot hardshell. Does that work for hitching a ride? I will also bring an extra saddle in case I need to drive and carry an extra boat. I think we can sort it all out at the meeting place.

      May 28, 2014

    • Ron

Plenty of room. I have a full size (8ft) pickup bed with a ladder rack and also have a 13 ft hardshell. We'll figure it out at the meeting place.

    May 25, 2014

    • Sue

I noticed most people photoed on your trip were not wearing PFDs. As the instigator of Boise Area Paddlers I need to let you know that all people participating in Boise Area Paddlers trips will be required to wear PFDs at all times during trips. Sorry if you need to change your plans accordingly.

      May 25, 2014

    • Darryl G.

I don't have a problem with that Sue, when with BAP you set the rules and I will follow them, safety is my first priority but I do allow others to decide if they want to wear their PFD's. I do however require everyone to have a PFD with them at all times.

      2 · May 26, 2014

  • Stone

I'm wondering how strong the current is. I've been sitting on my butt studying for the last three years and I'm seriously out of shape. I guess worst comes to worst, I can just float back down to the cars. :)

    May 24, 2014

    • Darryl G.

You should be fine Stone, I made the trup Sat. and I have a broken back. We will all help each other, thats what's great about going with a group.

Is anyone interested in doing some short training runs around Boise in the next few days? Maybe around Lucky Peak Dam on the Boise River

      May 26, 2014

  • Sue

Please note that all participants in Boise Area Paddlers trips will be required to wear PFD's at all times during Boise Area Paddler trips regardless of your perception of your skills or the danger of the situation. If this does not meet your expectations of the trip, please adjust your RSVP accordingly. Thanks.

planning to take a inflatable kayak ( tributary tomcat ). Any concerns with it being suitable for the trip?

    May 21, 2014

    • Mike

Darryl - i was visiting Idaho River sports today. I asked about the tomcat vs the pyranha ammo ( white water kayak ). the feedback I got was the ammo would probably be easier to paddle. Looks like either could work. ( BTW - I was looking for a Liquid Logic coup 10 .... sadly they didn't have any ). Thanks for the feedback.

I'll be in an inflatable kayak as well.

      May 23, 2014

I have an extra hard shell kayak (9 foot) that I would be happy to loan to someone who needs one. Don't have an extra paddle or PFD though.

    May 15, 2014

I have plenty of PFDs for anyone that might need one.

I have posted a kayak trip for Memorial Day weekend Idaho Kayakers, if anyone wants to join us please let me know.

    May 16, 2014

    • Miste

Hi Darryl - where can I find info on the Idaho Kayakers?

      May 18, 2014

    • Darryl G.

Miste, if you just search Idaho Kayakers at the top of this page in Meetup it will take you to that group. From there if you are interested in joining you are more than welcome to. If you have any questions just shoot me a message.

      May 18, 2014

  • Darryl G.

As you know, I am the organizer of Idaho Kayakers and several of us are planning to attend this meetup, I see the start time is 8:00 and am wondering if this is when you plan to gather and leave Boise or be in Twin. I just want to make sure we all arrive at the launch about the same time. James, can you please shed some light on this for me?

    May 16, 2014

    • Darryl G.

Perfect James, that will put you here around 10:30. We will meet you at the launch. I am so amped for this gathering an looking forward to meeting everyone.

so I have a flatwater kayak but looking for a used 220 paddle if anyone has one for sale or to just borrow for this trip...is this a river trip though as I only have a flatwater and have only done that

    April 26, 2014

    • James R.

Esther, REI.com has longer paddles for less than $100. I've been looking at getting one.

      May 14, 2014

    • Sue

Be sure to order them soon, they are not in stock at the store.

      May 15, 2014

  • Sue

James, thanks for posting this. Great to have the participation. I will say yes for now but you're right - the weather needs to cooperate! Also, water levels need to be less than 3500 cfs to do the portage over Pillar Falls. The river is completely man controlled in this area so can change from day to day. This is a beautiful paddle and should be lots of fun!

    April 18, 2014

    • James R.

Sue, it sounds like you know what you are doing with this trip so if you want to take the lead just let me know! I just want to make it happen, I don't care who organizes. :-)

      May 14, 2014

    • Sue

James - You are doing a fine job and more than welcome to lead. I'm just the group organizer but can make you a co-organizer if you'd like me to. Thanks for taking the initiative on this.

      May 15, 2014

  • James R.

I have a 4 door pickup, so I can haul some boats and people. If you are willing to drive please post below. If you aren't willing to drive please be ready to pony up the cash to make it even for those who will drive. I'd like for us to carpool as much as we reasonably can, to be environmentally conscious, and to make sure nobody has to drive on their own unless that is their preference.

    May 14, 2014

  • James R.

A little over 2 weeks from our scheduled trip. If anyone else wants to help organize this, just let me know. Otherwise, you're stuck with me. :-)

We will all help each other on the portages, but if you don't think you can pack your own gear, please be courteous and pack light for those of us who will be portaging it for you!

Some of you might be fast paddlers and some might be slow. We can decide if we all stick together or break into smaller groups based on ability once we get there. I would like to think that we will help each other out and as long as everyone has a good attitude, smiles and tries, that we won't leave you behind just because you are a bit slow.

    May 14, 2014

  • Darryl G.

I am going to say yes to joining this event but as some of you know I was in a bad wreck in Jan. and am still recovering. I broke my back and have a large section of it fused together. I will need help with the portage but my 14' Manta Ray can carry any extra cargo you can't fit in your boat. This will be my first paddle of the year and I am truly excited to meet all of you.

    April 28, 2014

    • Sue

Glad you can make it, Darryl. We can all help each other with the portage so should be okay.

      1 · April 28, 2014

      What day Darryl?

      April 29, 2014

    • Darryl G.

Well I was planning on Sat but I will be in Boise now so I will have to try and plan for next weekend. If the weather is nice I can see an all day float on the 10th.
