Boise Little Theater - "Inherit the Wind"

Our last two visits to BLT, to see the comedies "Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!)" and "Wrong Window" were fun, so let's try going back, this time to see a drama. "Inherit the Wind" is based on the famous Scopes "monkey" trial. Tickets are available at the BLT box office, (208)[masked] or online, at http://www.boiselittletheater.org/tickets.html. The box office is currently open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from noon to 3PM. Starting March 1, when the show opens, the box office will be open from noon to 4:30PM. Tickets are $12.50. If you buy online, I believe there is a $2.50 service charge but I'm not 100% sure of that.

This was another really fun outing, starting with great food and fellowship at Cafe Vicino and ending with a very entertaining play at Boise Little Theater. Thanks for organizing this, Bob; I'm looking forward to getting together with the group again soon. :)

Is it to late to get in on this event?

    March 9, 2013

    • Bob P.

Nope! You should be able to call the box office at[masked] starting at noon today (Saturday) and see if there are tickets. I'd be amazed if there weren't still tickets available, but you might not be able to sit with the rest of the group. You can try, though. Ask for the Boise Active Singles group.

A subset is going to dinner before the show, at Cafe Vicino (808 W Fort St) at 6PM. Do you want to join us? If I don't hear from you, I'll assume you're NOT joining us for dinner.

Is it too late to get in on the show?

For those who are going to dinner at Cafe Vicino, if something comes up and you have to cancel, please call Cafe Vicino at[masked], tell them you're part of Bob Pownall's reservation, and that you have to cancel.

Bob, what is the reservation listed under at Cafe Vicino?

    March 9, 2013

    • Bob P.

Hi, Virginia! The reservations are under my name.

Enough about dinner, time for something about the play! :)

Since "Inherit the Wind" is based on a historical incident (the famous Scopes Monkey Trial), I thought it would be interesting to do some reading about the play, in order to better understand it.

One thing I learned is that the play, while based on a real incident, was not meant to be an accurate retelling of history. In fact, the authors have said it was meant as an examination and critique of the anti-intellectualism and anti-Communism of the then-current McCarthy era, using the Scopes Trial as a starting point. Some of the characters in the play don't have a historical basis, while some events in the play were invented or collapsed in time.

If you'd like to learn more about the play, here's a link to the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inherit_the_Wind_%28play%29

And here's a link to SparkNotes study guide for the play: http://www.sparknotes.com/drama/inheritwind/

OK, the updated dinner list is: myself, Peggy Washburn, Ellen Barbour Cole, Carol Crothers, Virginia Hemingway (at 6:15PM), Margaret (no last name), Leah Bachtel, Bev Chaney, and Tony Barela. Anybody else? (Reply to this post rather than starting a new post. It's easier for me to keep track of things that way.)

As Virginia wrote, please cancel your RSVP if your plans change. Also, please comment here that you're canceling. I don't have any visibility when someone cancels an RSVP. I know someone canceled last night or this morning, because the number of RSVPs changed from 14 to 13, but I don't know who. I had to double-check that it wasn't one of the people who said they were coming to Cafe Vicino.

I've made reservations at Cafe Vicino for nine people at 6PM Saturday. If you'd like to get a head start on deciding what to have, their menu is available at http://www.cafevicino... Note that, by default, the lunch menu comes up. Just click "Dinner" to get the dinner menu. I'm thinking the Chicken Meatballs with Linguine sounds good, but a lot's going to depend on how hungry I am that evening. I might go with a bowl of the Tomato Basil Soup and the Arugula Salad!

Time to start planning for dinner. So far, it looks like the following people are interested in meeting for dinner before the show: myself, Peggy Washburn, Ellen Barbour Cole, Carol Crothers, and possibly Virginia Hemingway.

    Anybody else?

Since nobody has proposed any alternatives, I'll make reservations at Cafe Vicino. I'm going to make the reservations for 6PM. That should give us time to have dinner and still make it to the theater by 7:30PM to pick up our tickets. Hoever, I'm open to making reservations earlier, say, 5:30PM, it people would like to have more margin. I don't think we want to go later than 6PM.

I think 6 is a good time to meet for dinner. I also had my ticket mailed, so I won't need to wait in line at the theater. I'm looking forward to our get-together!

Something unrelated to this meetup but hey! If you're attending this meetup, you're probably interested in theater.

I volunteer at Stage Coach Theater. This Saturday (March 2), I'm working house - taking tickets, seating patrons, staffing the refreshments before the show and at intermission, cleanup after the show, that kind of stuff.

There's supposed to be two people working house but I'll be by myself. If someone would like to join me, it would help me out and you'd get to see the show - "Painting Churches" - for free. You'd need to be there at 7:15PM. Curtain is 8:15PM.

Stage Coach Theater is at 4802 W. Emerald - just northeast of the intersection of Emerald & Orchard. On the web, they're at http://stagecoachtheatre.com/

If you're interested, don't respond here. Instead, send me a Meetup email by clicking on my name and then clicking on the "Send Email" link at my Meetup profile page. Thanks!

I've made my reservation at BLT for Saturday, March 9, and mentioned that there were would be several other BAS members attending.

If you want to sit with us, mention Boise Active Singles when you make your reservation, and the box office will try to seat us together in the best available seats.

    February 26, 2013

    • Bob P.

Note that the box office is currently open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from noon until 3PM. The show opens March 1. At that point, the box office will be open Monday through Saturday, noon until 4:30PM, and again one hour before the show.

We'll probably want to sit together. I don't want to buy tickets for everyone - too much chance of being stuck with tickets due to last-minute cancellations. The best idea I've had so far is for me to call BLT on Tuesday, when it opens, make my reservation, and mention that it's part of a Boise Active Singles group. Then everyone else can just ask for the BAS group when making their reservations.

Does anyone have a better idea?

    February 23, 2013

    • Carol C.

I've never been to BLT before, so I will follow your lead and call for reservations on Tuesday.

That sounds like a good plan. By the way, Bob, I thoroughly enjoyed the Saturday night Boise Master Chorale/Philharmonic concert. It must have been fun to participate in that!

When we went to see "Wrong Window", about half the people in the Meetup met for dinner at The Ram before the show. I realize it's still a long way out, but start thinking if you'd like to meet for dinner before Inherit the Wind", and where. The Ram is a good, and convenient, choice, but we can try a different place. Cafe Vicino, near the Co-op, might be a possibility, and I'm sure there are others.

    February 21, 2013

    • Virginia H.

I had that set up with a group of women and then I got sick - but yes, dinner at the Ram before would be perfect and we could car pool if there aren't that many. I bought tickets for everyone and won't do that again....

Seniors pay $9.00 - too bad we can't get them as a group??

Sounds fun! And my first time at the Little Theater!
