Explore social media marketing at Book Marketing Meetup

This week I've got a conflict of interest, but fortunately Jan Bear of Market Your Book will be guest hosting on the subject of social media, due to popular request.

From Jan.

We've all heard the success stories about authors using social media to promote their books. They have thousands of followers and millions of likes and people hanging on every tweet.

For most of us, though, if the social media don't come naturally, we need someone to help us figure out how to use them effectively without sucking up all our time to write our books.

This week's Book Marketing Meetup will focus on social media marketing. Jan Bear will give a quick rundown of some best practices for Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest. We'll talk about audience, why the different social media matter, and what it takes to really shine.

We'll then open the discussion for participants to talk about their successes and frustrations using different social media (doesn't have to be limited to those five).

Whether you're a complete beginner or a social media ninja, we'll appreciate your questions and comments. Beginners ask the questions we all wonder about but never get around to finding out. Social media ninjas bring the benefit of their experience.

Let's find out how we can use social media to make our book marketing more successful. See you at the Meetup on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

It was a nice give-and-take meeting of the minds.

I had always rejected social media as impersonal, but your view of creating relationship and how to do so struck a cord. Thank you for sharing.

It's been an exciting discovery for me, as well. Glad to share. Last night I sat in a pub watching the musical performance of some of my new friends; I looked around and counted 14 people I didn't know two months ago, almost all of whom are now FB friends, many of whom are attending my readings, buying my books, and telling their friends and family. Better still, I've got new friends! And I really do love their music.

So I took the advice and started a separate business page on Facebook. So far I have 28 likes, but need two more to get over the hump. I'm sure more will come, but thought some of you might like to LIKE my page: https://www.facebook.com/BillieBly

We could talk about social media every time and never learn it all.

Pam, I know what you mean. It took me years to even consider using Twitter because of the name. Who wants to be caught "tweeting"?

I'm so glad I came last night. At least I feel some direction in this "tweet" thing. I sure enjoyed seeing/meeting everyone.

So nice to meet everyone, yes, a great exchange of information. Another very informative book about self-publishing by Guy Kawasaki is "APE - How to Publish a Book".

Thanks Ilana and Becky. You both had good insights to share about your own experiences with social media. I enjoyed the meeting!

Becky (and anyone else interested), I recommend Guy Kawasaki's book "What the Plus: Google+ for the Rest of Us" for lots of ideas.
