Mingle with publishing folks III.

BookMachine is back in New York with a brand new format!

If you work in publishing and live in New York, we're pleased to say that the lovely MaryAnn Kernan, MA Publishing Studies Director, City University London, is hosting New York's first social/speaker BookMachine event:

BookMachine New York with Ben Schrank, President of Razorbill (imprint of Penguin)

The event will take place on Wednesday 24th April at Iguana (West 54th, between 8th and Broadway)

This month's sponsor is:

City University

If you aren't sure what to expect, you can check out reviews from Elisabeth Watson (Publishing Trendsetter) and Ellen Jacobs (Bookerella)

The evening will kick off from 6:00 and there'll be a free drink (thanks to our sponsors City University, London) for folks who show up early.

At 7:00pm Ben Schrank will give a short talk about collaborating with non-publishers.

Who was th guy who asked during the main speech ... why publishing doesn't print more relevant books? It was so needed, and esp. as the speaker was saying he and his company put thousands and thousands of bucks into a Mary Kay and Kate Olsen coffee table book, as well as the others he was touting! Way to go whoever you were!

If you go visit a bookstore or or do a search on Amazon you'll find out there are more and more books published these days on any subject, including news and politics. Yesterday's speaker happened to specialize in offbeat books for young readers–there's a market for that too. The challenge is that with so many titles, and crowded book stores it's become difficult and expensive to promote titles and make them noticeable to the reviewers and the public.

Good to see you Guido. I've had one book locally published, and self published two. I've also written three others. What should I do?

My first time with this group and it was very good. I like having a speaker as well as time to mingle.

Hey! As of 4/23, I just learned that my new novel, "The Last Will & Testament of Zelda McFigg," is a finalist for Black Lawrence Press's Big Moose Prize (http://blacklawrence.wordpress.com/2013/04/23/big-moose-prize-finalists-and-semi-finalists-announced/). So I'm coming tomorrow night in a state of celebration.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
