Booze & Book Club Midtown Monthly Meetup

June's book club selection is, "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby.

From Amazon.com,

"Rob is a pop music junkie who runs his own semi-failing record store. His girlfriend, Laura, has just left him for the guy upstairs, and Rob is both miserable and relieved. After all, could he have spent his life with someone who has a bad record collection? Rob seeks refuge in the company of the offbeat clerks at his store, who endlessly review their top five films (Reservoir Dogs...); top five Elvis Costello songs ("Alison"...); top five episodes of Cheers (the one where Woody sang his stupid song to Kelly...). Rob tries dating a singer whose rendition of "Baby, I Love Your Way" makes him cry. But maybe it's just that he's always wanted to sleep with someone who has a record contract. Then he sees Laura again. And Rob begins to think (awful as it sounds) that life as an episode of thirtysomething, with all the kids and marriages and barbecues and k.d. lang CD's that this implies, might not be so bad."

Members can RSVP for this meeting beginning today, 4/8/14

Has a book been selected for the July meet-up?

    Hello all,
I have let Everett and Corrine know that my house in East Sac is available for a meet-up, but no one has taken me up on the offer.

Marty, I am sure there are many great individuals in Roseville, and that the host is one of them. However, I am not yet a part of your group as I don't usually drink, so I haven't met you or Athena. I understand that If she's known to you--as i am not--then your impulse to defend her attack on me is understandable. I've no doubt that Athena has many wonderful qualities and is very personable. But about your kind offer, Marty, I read a lot and and write even more. If I had devoted my life more to the pursuit of money and wonderful things to own instead of art, I would probably have a house big enough to entertain the members of this group. Nevertheless, I would be glad to, but I don't think they'd fit into my tiny one bedroom apartment; nor would I want them to try. That's why an external location if preferable to me. So, I therefore decline, but in the near future hope to buy you, the Roseville host, and Athena a drink someday. Cheers.

Doug, do you live in the great midtown? You did attack the Roseville host by slamming the location in which he lives, and all the people of Roseville. You seem to advertise an intolerant prospective of anyone who is different than yourself. Are you willing to be a solution, and open up your house and host?

Athena, your vitriolic reply, which is a personal attack on me as opposed to my comment on the political demographics of a region, is disappointing and shocking. Going forward, I hope that your better angels prevail in your judgement of individuals. Peace, out.

I will go if it's in Midtown. as it's at a home in Republican Roseville of all places, count me out.

Doug Huse, you should mind your manners or choose your words more carefully. How dare you judge, label or criticize any of our book club hosts with such a broad stroke? Count me out of ANY definition of "party" lamenting your absence.

bummer about the location. I crammed like crazy all weekend to finish this book but I'm coming from work in Richmond and wouldn't be able to make it an extra 20 miles during rush hour. This was going to be my first meetup with the group. Are the meetups not usually in Midtown?

Are you sure you wouldn't still be able to make it, Michelle? We don't start discussing the book until at least 7:30.

I don't have a car, and that's not midtown. Anyone can carpool? I live in midtown and can meet you anywhere.

so it doesn't seem like I'll be able to come. My house is in mid town (perhaps closer to east sac, but still), I don't mind hosting the next month's book if you're interested.

Unfortunately I am not able to meet outside of midtown. Hopefully an event gets scheduled in midtown soon.
