Rescheduled! Book: The Cellist of Sarajevo AND Good-Bye Party for Kylie!

Rescheduled due to a weather threat that never came! (oooooops)

De has selected the book for May, and will lead the group discussion. AND - We will also have a good-bye party for Kylie who will be leaving to start her teaching career in Arkansas.

Book Description:
Inspired by Vedran Smailovic, the cellist who, in 1992, played in a bombed-out Sarajevo square for 22 days in memory of the 22 people who were killed by a mortar attack, this is a novel about four people trying to maintain a semblance of their humanity in the besieged city. Kenan trudges across the city to collect water from the brewery for his family; on his way to buy bread, Dragan meets an old friend who reminds him of life before the war; Arrow, a sniper fighting against the occupation, is charged with keeping the cellist alive; and the cellist himself, in his simple act of performing, courageously brings a touch of life back to the citizens.

Let's explore options for a quieter place. It was really hard to lead a discussion over the noise of the restaurant (kitchen, music, wait staff, other diners). We really need a room that can we closed off.

Totally agree.. Are there any places in particular that you are looking at Babs? If I can help let me know

I just spoke with Gumbo's on the Georgetown Square, and it sounds promising. They do have a private room, and the owner said we can have it unless a private dinner is booked (which she said is unlikely on a Tuesday night). If it does get booked, she said we can have the bar area upstairs. She said the bar is dead on Tuesday nights and there's no live music, she said it's very quiet. They also have happy hour priced appetizers and 1/2 price house wines - and they have 6 selections. I spoke with Helen since it's her turn to host in June. She gave me a thumbs up to book Gumbo's for this month. We'll see how it goes this one time.

It was great having you AND Pete join us! You both added a lot of insight in our discussion, and I enjoyed sitting next to you both! Pete was a very good sport with my 'token male' comments. :)

There are a number of videos of this cellist on line. I was interested after seeing him on a PBS show about Joan Baez. She visited Sarajevo and sang Amazing Grace on his stool.

Is there a separate meeting room? Do we eat there? Thanks!

No meeting room. When you go in, just tell them you're with the book club and they'll show you the way. They try to give us some space between us and the other diners, it works out well. Most of us do eat, at least an appetizer, some go for a full dinner. We set our time at 6:30 because that allows us to order during happy hour prices. Most of the appetizers are 1/2 price, as well as the house wines and beer. I hope this helps!
