Books, Brunch, and Beers: "Mort" by Terry Pratchett

This is our 1st book reading as the coolest reading club in Philadelphia. Shortly, Death begins to loathe his job, so he appoints his apprentice to take over while he takes a sojourn.

After our book discussion (as Laura mentions), we need to agree on our next book. Come with some ideas, please. An epic page turner physcological thriller? Coming of age?

I had to call it too, after driving around for more than 30 minutes trying to find parking. West Philly or even Olde City would be better for me, in the future. My budget does not extend to cc lot parking.

Hey guys, I'm so sorry to miss it, too! I have a last minute work trip that I have to fly out for this afternoon that just came up. Arcanian, represent the Pratchett love for me! And, to make up for this, I volunteer to come up with the next beers meeting in 2 weeks.

Hey Laura, Sorry you missed it. On the bright side, everyone liked the book and found it very witty. Unfortunately, the consensus was that there didn't seem to be enough material for a deep philosophical discussion (and Justin kind of killed all hope when he compared it to Saturday-morning cartoons; there's only so much existential dichotomy you can get out of a metaphysical study of the Smurfs). Hope to see you at the next one - likely SK's The Shining.

      Hey Arcanian, I love it.

Sadly, I have a work obligation. I'll look forward to seeing everyone soon, though.

What's the deal, Tom? Lemme know if it's just a one off or if Sundays no longer work

      October 6, 2013

    • Tom L.

It was a one-off. Or at best an every three months kind of deal.

Sorry I missed it - will try and make the next one. I suggest a saturday or friday happy-hour timeslot, where we could better put to use the copious amounts of beer we drink into an evening on the town. A midday beer buzz on a sunday afternoon would most likely go to waste... or lead to a very unproductive Monday

My suggestion for next time is Yoshimura Akira's One Man's Justice!

Hey all, I am so close I can taste it, but having a heck of a time finding parking. I haven't bailed!

Sorry, can't make it because of my dad visiting. I'd like to suggest a book for the future so I'll post it and a synopsis in the comments later!

I wholeheartedly agree about starting later--trying to find a spot for so many people at prime brunch time on a Sunday is going to be difficult moving forward. Also, I'm guessing we'll be picking our next book after our discussion of Mort... everyone come ready with some ideas!

Yep, and I am slightly nervous to admit, I am willing to.... I think I may be potentially willing to... uh hmm.... (big sigh!)... willing to read something other than fantasy... THERE I SAID IT!

Thanks for the later start and DT location. My old stomping grounds...

Hey Everyone, I just set the location at the pop-up beer garden near the corner of Broad St /Spruce St. It looks like we are going to have really great weather this weekend, and this place shuts down at the end of october. I figured we could enjoy the fall weather while we have it. Also, Greg mentioned moving the meeting a tad bit later in the day. I am going to try and contact whoever runs this thing to see what they think about a group meeting Sunday. They open at noon, so may move the meeting to 1pm or 1:30pm, let me know what you think about moving a few hours back...

My dad is coming to visit this weekend and I wasn't going to be able to make it because of that, but if the meeting is later in the day, I could stop by. But don't let that determine the time if others want to meet earlier!

Just a thought.....as much as I love beer for lunch, do you think the meeting is too early for some?

Don't know if it's too early to talk location, but I nominate Silk City on Spring Garden and 8th. Good beer, and transcendent chicken and waffles.

Hey Tom, I just saw your recom. I will check it out if you think it should fit 10-12 ppl and we can hang out for awhile drinking and eating and talking. I just don't want to have to shout too much...

There's an outdoor which should do nicely.

I missed the other meeting. Can you tell me the title of the book you guys decided to read?

What do the Founders think of returning to National Mechanics for this Books, Brunch, Beers and Bloody Mary's: MORT meeting? I know it got a bit loud at one point, so if you know of another place we could meet for the ~10 that will show up, recommend it. A side-room or cubby-hole sounds cozy.
