First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.

So nice meeting everyone last night! Had some fun conversation even if it wasn't critically acclaimed. Thanks for making me feel so welcome!

Shannon and Jonathan thank you for last night! You both are the kindest and sweetest people. I am so happy to know you both. Our book club has to be the best out there because of all its members... I can't imagine any others coming close. Thanks too for all the scary movie tips.

Thanks so much Michael! Agreed, we are very lucky to have our group.

Sorry the book was not so great. The company was fine though!

    • amoreena

You can't be held responsible for the book choice, it was a vote! Or we can just blame it on the accounting firm that tallied the votes....

      Agreed-good company and conversation

      1 · October 29, 2013

Thanks to all that came last night! Even though the book was not a fan favorite, I think we made up for the scare factor with our ghost stories!

Shannon and Jonathan--Thank you for hosting in your beautiful home--great food, conversation and a little Halloween fun . . .

Glad I read the book, but it is not one of my favorites

Such a fun night!! Thanks so much for hosting! After all of the spooky ghost talk, I was a little scared to walk to the car in the dark... See you all soon!

    1 · October 28, 2013

    • Shannon

Thanks so much for coming! Agreed, the post-meeting ghost talk had me a little freaked out.

The RSVP is closed, but it says there's one spot available. I'd love to join if you have room!

Hi Kristin, not sure why it said one open but rsvp's are still closed. I'll let you know if anything opens. :)

Asked to be a prosecuting attorney for the reenactment Salem witch trials in MA at the end of the month, so will be unable to attend the book meetup. My reading of A Discovery of Witches apparently qualified me for this, and after that book, I WANT to burn a few. Just kidding, or not...

We will sure miss you but sounds like a great experience!

Go get them dirty witches Jim! Funny, my copy of "Discovery of Witches" did not include a law degree... (Nor an apology from the author for wasting my time.)

No waiting list for this one?

    1 · September 19, 2013

    • Joe D

huh?? "overbooked in case of cancellations"? what if nobody cancels? I'm confused...

      September 19, 2013

    • Steve H.

If nobody cancels it will be extra cozy. :-)

      1 · September 19, 2013

Majority rules. Haunting of Hill House wins by a nose or two. It was a close battle though. Shannon and Johnathan have offered to host the meeting at their beautiful home as well. Details on that will follow!

So are we coming in costume to keep the scary Halloween theme going....?

      1 · September 19, 2013

    • Shannon

We can make it a costume party. ;) Or crazy wig party. Lol

    Works for me!

I'm probably too late to get a suggestion in, and I've already suggested two meetups, so I don't want to be a meetup hog...but Bram Stoker's Dracula is a compelling read...the grandaddy of them all, as a really old person would say...

    and the winner is ??

    September 17, 2013

  • Steve H.

Your right! Stop the presses. I had to fire the accounting firm of 'Myself and I' as clearly they can not do simple math. The actual vote as cast are:

    1. Donna - ???
    2. Karen - Ghost Story
    3. Rosemary - Pet Cemetery
    4. Dharma - Pet Cemetery
    5. Amoreena - Haunting of Hill House
    6. Michelle - Haunting of Hill House
    7. Dawn - Pet Cemetery
    8. Jeanna - Haunting of Hill House
    9. Michael - Haunting of Hill House
    10. Johnathan - Shining
    11. Shannon - Shining
    12. Steve - Pet Cemetery

    RSVP Summary
Haunting of House Hill - 4
    Pet Cemetery - 4
    The Shining - 2
    Ghost Story - 1

WL1. Loran - Haunting of Hill House
    WL2. Jim - ???

Donna didn't vote yet! Nobody buy anything yet! We need a tie breaker! Where is Donna? Or if anyone wants to change their votes... Or count waiting list votes? It's so exciting!

    1 · September 16, 2013

    • Loran

Hey- I feel like I live in Puerto Rico! I know I'm only only on the waiting list, but doesn't my vote count?

      5 · September 16, 2013

    • Shannon

With Donna's vote, looks like Haunting of Hill House still wins, right?

      1 · September 16, 2013

  • Michael

I'm all for the majority but wondering how many have read one or the other?

    September 16, 2013

    • Dawn

I haven't read any of them, will happily read whatever the majority votes for but King is just the master of creepy!

      1 · September 16, 2013

    • Shannon

      Agreed... Want to be scared.

      September 16, 2013

  • Loran

How about two groups- one doing PC and one doing House Hill? We could meet at the same place and merge after to compare.

    1 · September 16, 2013

    • Shannon

Either way...Jonathan and I are okay with any of them honestly. Haven't read them.

      September 16, 2013

  • Jim C.

I haven't read either, so Horror Hill one sounds fine to me.

    1 · September 16, 2013

  • Donna

OK--Pet Cemetery and the Shining scared the heck out of me years ago so I'm voting for Haunting of Hill House . . .

    1 · September 16, 2013

  • Michelle

Check your email for my vote- I lost the screen on my iphone.

    September 15, 2013

  • Jeanna

We sure are an enthusiastic group of bookies aren't we?
Meetup is full less than wo hours after you posted this Steve! so, what're we reading?

    1 · September 15, 2013

  • Shannon

Great idea to vote! Excited to hear what we'll be reading. ;)
