Truly, truly not trying to be difficult here....and maybe everyone else already knows the Sat meetup location.

I can't locate it on the web-site...it says "no location yet".    If there's a secret code or something else I'm supposed to understand in order to view the location would deeply appreciate someone letting me know.  I can get into the meetup site just fine....just can't locate the rendezvous point.

Thanks so much!

Kathleen

Off topic, but hoping we might be able to nail down the location of our Sat gathering...

I too have to juggle alot on Sat...have not managed to attend yet....and would like to be able to change my 'maybe' to a "yes", once I know where we'll meet and I can figure out a way to arrange the day and swing it.

Thanks!

Kathleen

I think this has been a great discussion.  I am open to and interested in discussing all of the above and would hope that no single discussion or topic becomes the one primary focus of the group.

I also love the idea of an evening meeting/wine, etc.  I haven't been

able to make it to either of the meetings so far because Saturdays are

a challenge for me with young kids and family time and other

obligations.  I would more easily be able to sneak out on a weeknight

evening.  If Saturdays continue I'll keep trying to make it then though!

I'm up for any type of discussion whatsoever over a glass or two of wine.  Just be aware that I only guarantee what I say before the first sip and no accountability whatsoever after the first glass as I tend to lose the thread and say, "what were we talking about again?".   Feel free to send me to my own table if I can't keep up.

How about Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.

Hi All:

All in all?I hope we can move on from the topics of religion and God generally.  They are interesting in small doses, but  I was hoping that this group would approach different topics through readings, e.g. political philosophy, history, not so well known classic literature, very relevant current topics (health care), etc.  I was looking forward to a good book club?not a ?metaphysical club.?  While I might enjoy such a club, I?d rather not mix purposes.  How about a new group meeting in the evening over a glass or two of wine for philosophical discussions?no reading required?  I?m game if others are!

I tend to agree with Lisa -- my past experience with books both trying to "prove" or "disprove" the existence of God is that they either use really absurdist reasoning to try and skirt around the fact that God is ultimately a metaphysical entity, or else they engage in a sort of circular argument that I don't find intellectually rewarding. However, if there's a good book that touches on those topics, I wouldn't be absolutely against them.

OTOH, both of our first two picks deal with the issue of faith and the supernatural in the modern world. The idea -- whether of fate or a karma-like process exists in the universe, and whether we exist in a larger context of curse and redemption that spans beyond the scope of our lives -- is at the center of what happens to Oscar in The Brief Wondrous Life. I liked discussing these kinds of concepts in Life of Pi, and were I able to come to the next meetup, I'd enjoy discussing them in the context of Brief Wondrous Life, too....
