Are you an intelligent, curious woman between the ages of 30 and 60 (or thereabout) who would love to read and discuss books that educate you in some way? Do you who wonder how the brain works, how the environment and food is affecting your health, what a new scientific discovery overseas could mean for you in terms of your beliefs and ethics, or what it come mean to you when we lose another species to extinction? Do you like to read about historical events that have shaped how we think about medicine, or how plagues start? Maybe you want to read and discuss why only some birds fly south, why tulips are such a big deal in Holland, or what it was like to be Hitler’s inner circle.

About me: I’ve been the “administrator” of a book club I helped start in 1995. I am 45, a mom to two elementary-school children, a policy writer for the government, and wife of a small business owner. I have enjoyed my book club for almost 20 years and have made long-lasting friendships, but I would like to start reading and discussing books that enrich my brain and, well, just make me feel smarter. As a woman with a graduate degree in English, I want to build a book group community of other well-read, curious women with whom I could learn from and share my life experiences. My ideal club would comprise women who come from different walks of life. By this I mean I welcome women of all faiths, races, and political points of view. It is the diversity of the members that make for interesting discussion!

Who should join? Curious women who have a love of learning! If you are the type that is willing to share your opinions in a non-threatening way while listening to who may have a different viewpoint than yours, this club is for you. If you are domineering or others have told you that you “always have to be right,” this book club is NOT for you. My goal is to have healthy debates and passionate discussions about our book material, while letting in light-hearted moments and lots of humor. I want to learn from you and I want you to learn from others. Ultimately, this book is about growing your knowledge base in various subjects.

 Other requirements include the following:

• A willingness to meet once every 4 to 6 weeks

• Adept at reading semi-technical material (non-fiction books will be read)

• A commitment to reading and discussing the book (read the book, come with thoughts)
