Next BORN-AND-RAISED NEW YORKERS Meetup will be Saturday, January 11th at 3:30

  • January 11, 2014 · 3:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A NEW LOCATION! Sugar and Plumm cannot accommodate our large group, unfortunately. I chose it because they are so big, but apparently many people eat brunch in the late afternoon and they can only accommodate a much smaller group. So in the interest of time, we will meet where we met last month, a few blocks away, at Artie's Delicatessen on Broadway near 83rd Street. We DO have a reservation there! Sorry for the switch and looking forward to seeing everyone at ARTIE'S at 3:30pm this Saturday!

Please remember that YOU MUST RSVP IN ADVANCE (the RSVP list will be checked to make sure everyone is an actual member and also that you pay your $3 fee). Thanks! Stay warm and see you Saturday!

Hi Everyone! I am so bummed that I won't be able to get there today due to a last minute scheduling conflict; unfortunately I won't be to make it to the UWS area today. I do hope to make to the next one as this sounds like a great group. Have fun!

Thanks to everyone who came out in the rain and shared their good company and New York stories! I loved how easily everyone got along and how the conversation flowed nonstop. Another highlight was when the waiter came over and quizzed us on "late great" New York places. Looking forward to more good times with more great and true New Yorkers!

Great time, great company. Artie's was like retro New York so I ordered a root beer egg cream.

I realized when you're with authentic native Yorkers, this hometown boy doesn't have to explain his humor, deal. with the term "inappropriate," which frees us to discuss the deeper questions of existence; like "is a gizzard a giblet? I loved every moment of the meet up and will return next time with some Ubet for "B"

    January 13, 2014

    • B

Can't wait for my Ubet - THEN I will really be a true New Yorker!

My excellent Pastrami sandwich was as authentic as the NY'kers who attended. Great way to spend an otherwise dreary Saturday afternoon. Looking forward to the next MeetUp of this group.
    Thank you B!

Very nice! The people were interesting to talk to, and it felt very relaxed. I will definitely attend again.

It's actually fairly "warm" out - in the high 50s! But I understand some people are not fans of traveling in the rain. See you another time!

I noticed that the RSVP didn't allow for reserving for a guest. I may be bringing my boyfriend to this. I wasn't sure he'd be able to come since he often works weekends, but he's off tomorrow. He's also a born and bred New Yorker, so no worries.

    January 10, 2014

    • B

Yes, because I am trying to keep the group to the theme - people who were born and raised here. Can your boyfriend join too? Thanks!

I don't know if I can make it since I a have been sick all week unfortunately, I really wanted to come, but the trip from Forest Hills might be to much for me. I was hoping we were going to meet in a place in midtown. I missed the first meetup and was really looking forward to this one. I have to see how I feel tomorrow. Marilyn

    January 10, 2014

    • B

I agree that Midtown is a convenient location. It can be hard to find a place in Midtown though that is open on weekends, can seat a large group, and is not a bar. Hope you feel better!

I am bringing a guest who is a native new Yorker, and who plans to join the group. Is that allowed?

    January 10, 2014

    • B

Yes. But can your friend join the group first?

      January 10, 2014

Great! I used to get my chicken matzo ball soup by the quart here :) The UWS will also have a special nostalgic place in my heart...looking forward to meeting other friendly New Yorkers!

B, good choice in the switch. Frankly, the deli is more representative of NYC than the other spot.

    January 8, 2014

    • B

Yes, I agree! I was just looking for some variety, since we met there last time. But they were more accommodating - just goes to show you who the real New Yorkers are! ;)

Given that I am not working this Saturday (unless my boss wants me to come in because she needs me), I will be in attendance. Hope I'll have a chance to meeting people like myself who appreciate the days when New York was earthy and the dust was not "swept underneath the carpet", the days when we could "stick it to the Man"! Peace out...

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please note that I have had to CHANGE THE LOCATION TO ARTIE'S DELICATESSEN, a few blocks away on Broadway by 83rd Street (where we met last time). It turns out that Sugar and Plumm, while a large space, cannot accommodate a group our size. We do have a reservation for Artie's and I am thrilled so many people are coming. See you Saturday at ARTIE'S at 3:30! PLEASE make sure to RSVP in advance! Thanks!

HI. I do not see specific details about the meetup. from google I see it is a cafe. Are we going and sit first come first serve and will it be seperate checks? thanks.

    January 7, 2014

    • B

Yes, people are seated when they come. It is a large space, which is partially why I chose it. If they allow it, I will make a reservation a few days before. The separate checks part is up to the venue. Most places don't want to do 20-odd separate checks, especially if many people are just having coffee and dessert, but we will ask. Other Meetups I have attended just pass the bill around and people estimate and it all works out, but we will certainly ask if they can do separate checks for us.

As a gay man I am curious, is this a singles group or just a group of native new Yorkers getting together?

    January 7, 2014

    • B

      The latter.

Hi all...I'm a native NYer, but my partner isn't. (we spend alternate weeks between Bronx and West Hartford, CT). Will the "rules" allow her to attend?:~)

    January 7, 2014

    • B

      Hi Adrienne,
Thanks for asking. If you want to bring her on Saturday, that is okay, but in terms of joining the group and coming on a regular basis, she wouldn't "qualify". :)

Looking forward to it! Possible to read a short piece?

    January 6, 2014

what is the reason for the three dollars per person. Are they dues?

    January 6, 2014

    • B

Meetup organizers have to pay Meetup a monthly fee to run a group. It's also a lot of work to organize an event (those of you who have organized events understand this!). So for this reason, many Meetup organizers charge a minimal fee to attend an event. I did not do this in the past, and after paying over $800 to Meetup in monthly fees decided it was time to join the other organizers and charge a nominal fee to help defray the cost of running a group and the hours of time I spend on it. They are not dues and each Meetup you attend will have a small fee.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
