Sail on the Charles, then Lunch/Brunch

  • April 13, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

I have a membership (and Sonar rating) at Community Boating, on the Charles river near the Hatch Shell. So I can take 5-6 guests out for a short (1 ~ 1.5 hr) sail on the Charles river.

The plan is, we meet at CBI ~10am, sail for a bit, then go someplace nearby for lunch/brunch. Should be about 15-30 mins to Chinatown if we want to do Dim Sum, if we want to do an American style lunch the Liberty Hotel is very close to there. If people want to put in the work and prepare ahead of time, we could even do a picnic on the Esplanade.

When: Some Saturday or Sunday, when the weather is nice.

Where: Community Boating. Lunch/brunch location TBD (suggestions/proposals welcome!).

How many people can come: Only 6-7 people fit on a Sonar, so I can only take 5-6 people at a time. If we can find another person who has a membership (and has the proper rating) at CBI then we can take more people. If not, then I could take 5-6 people sailing before lunch, then 5-6 people after lunch, so maximum of 12 people get to sail. If you want to join us just for lunch, and pass on the sailing, that's totally fine.

Who can come: You should know how to swim. At least enough to survive for 5 minutes in the water in case you fall in, while I turn the boat around and come to get you.

Logistics: For directions, other info, consult CBI website:
http://www.community-boating.org/

Best way to get there is by T - Red Line MGH/Charles stop. If you have to drive, you can park at the Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary parking lot. $7 to park there if I get your ticket validated at CBI. I don't know how many tickets I'm permitted to validate so please arrange a carpool if you're coming by car.

To bring: beverages and snacks to enjoy while floating along on the Charles enjoying the view of Boston. Sunblock. A padlock, so you can stow stuff you don't want to get wet in day lockers.

And check back periodically - since this is a weather dependent event, it might happen with not much in the way of advance warning.

Morning (be there at 10 am):
    Alvin
    Sally
    Lee
    Hui

    Michelle
    Meng
    Lu

If you cannot make it, let me know ASAP! At least by Thursday night or Friday morning. There are a LOT of people on the waiting list, so you're keeping someone who wants to go sailing from going, if you don't let us know that you're not coming in time for us to notify one of the people on the wait list.

People high up on the wait list: check Friday night/Saturday AM for final attendees list.

Weather for Saturday looks ok (though not great) so there is a good chance that this will happen this Sat (the 13th).

So, some info on what to bring, what to do once you get there, etc.

    What to bring:
warm clothes you don't mind getting dirty. It will be a bit chilly, especially in the morning. You can expect to get *some* Charles river water on your clothes, so wear something you don't mind getting dirty.

If you want to leave things that shouldn't go in the water, like your wallet, cell phone, etc., in a locker, bring a padlock. Maybe sunblock, in case the forecast is wrong and its sunny. If there is no sun you can leave it your locker.

    Once you get there:
Ask the front desk for a guest form, and fill it out. It'll take about 10 mins to get you life jackets, do a safety lecture, and train one of you to be crew. Hopefully we'll be on our way by 10:15 or 10:30.

What happens if you're late and we've left already? That's known as "missing your boat." Sorry.

  • Bao L.

Hey John, are life vests available for everyone on the boat?

    April 5, 2013

    • John

Yes, but I will give you a swimming test by making you take it off and jump in the Charles river.

John: Thank you very much for the arrangement! Can you please sign me up for the Sat afternoon session? I've work to do on Sat and be free around 2pm. Thanks again!

    April 9, 2013

  • John

It's going to be complicated to keep track of who is coming sailing, but not to lunch, and who is on the wait list, but will show up for lunch, so I'm going to create a separate meetup event for lunch at Hei La Moon. Please sign up there if you are planning on coming to lunch, even if you're on the attendees list for this event.

You're NOT obligated to come to lunch even if you sail, so if you're on the attendees list here but not on the list for the lunch event, I'll assume you're in for sailing ONLY, and you won't be joining us for lunch.

Likewise, it's okay to join us for lunch even if you won't be sailing.

I can do the afternoon Session for this one.

    Is there parking here?

    1 · April 8, 2013

    • John

CBI members can park at the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary parking lot for $7, after 5pm on weekdays, and 9am-10pm on weekends/holidays. If you give me your parking stub I can have it validated for you. I don't know if they'll let me validate 15 tix, so I highly recommend people who want to drive carpool with each other.

John, if you can't get in one of the two sailing section, Can I come join you for lunch?

    April 8, 2013

    • John

Yes, of course. And people on the wait list will get priority the next time there is a sailing event.

      April 8, 2013

  • Lu

John, could I please be assigned to the afternoon session? I don't think I can make the morning one.

    April 7, 2013

  • John

This event is weather-dependent, and it may be cancelled or postponed if it looks like we might get inclement weather on Saturday. So check back periodically for updates.

    April 7, 2013

  • soccer m.

I can only do afternoon. Need to drive someone to logan in the morning.

    April 6, 2013

  • John

Since there are a lot of people who want to go sailing, I will do 2 sailing sessions. One in the morning, at 10am, and one after lunch, ~2:30 pm. If you cannot make the morning, or afternoon, let me know. In a few days I will randomly assign 7 people to the morning session, and 7 to the afternoon session. So the schedule for the day will look as follows:

10 am: morning sailing session. Meet at Community Boating.
12:30: lunch. Unless people people have strong opinions against it, let's go to Hei La Moon for Dim Sum.
2:30pm: Afternoon sailing session. If you didn't join us for lunch, meet us at Community Boating. (This might get delayed a bit depending on how long lunch takes, and if we have to wait for a boat to become available)

People on the wait list: even if you can't get a spot for sailing, feel free to join us for lunch. Just drop me a note that you're coming for Dim Sum.

  • fang q.

oops, can't swim. Really wanna join though

    April 6, 2013

  • Angel

I'd really like to join if possible. How many runs you can do for the most, John/Steve?

    April 5, 2013

    • John

Two. One before lunch, one after. I plan on hosting other sailing meetup events later in the spring/summer, if you don't make it to the list on this one.

      April 6, 2013

  • John

One day's notice is too short, so let's try next Saturday, April 13th.

    April 6, 2013

    April 5, 2013

  • Ryan

    great idea!

    April 5, 2013

  • John

    1. Weather looks nice tomorrow. Should we try to do this Saturday?

    2. I'll ask Steve to increase list to 15. I think we can squeeze 8 people into the boat, so 7 people (+ me) sail in the morning, then 7 more in the afternoon, after lunch. So specify if you can only make it in the morning (~10am) or in the afternoon (~2, 3pm) or if you can make both. Or if you want to join just for the lunch, that's okay too.

    3. If you cannot make this one, there will be other sailing events later on in the spring/summer. I love sailing, so if I'm not away on a trip or hiking, I'm happy to take people sailing.

    4. There are life jackets for everyone. But I still think it's tempting fate to get on a boat without knowing how to swim. It's up to you, but I would at least take some swimming lessons before going on a small boat like this. Boats have been known to capsize and sink, you know.
