Sail on the Charles, then Lunch/Brunch II

1st group (of up to 7 people) meets at Community Boating ~10 am for a morning sail.

Then lunch/brunch somewhere nearby ~12, 12:30.

And another sail ~2:30 in the afternoon, for a 2nd group of 7 people.

When: some weekend day when the weather is nice, in early May.

People who sailed on 4/13, please wait a few days before signing up. I'd like to give people who haven't gotten to sail yet a chance to try it.

I'll also create a meetup for the lunch. Do people have any suggestions, preferences? If we do dim sum again I'll probably choose China Pearl.

Description/details from Sail on the Charles I:

I have a membership (and Sonar rating) at Community Boating, on the Charles river near the Hatch Shell. So I can take 5-6 guests out for a short (1 ~ 1.5 hr) sail on the Charles river.

The plan is, we meet at CBI ~10am, sail for a bit, then go someplace nearby for lunch/brunch. Should be about 15-30 mins to Chinatown if we want to do Dim Sum, if we want to do an American style lunch the Liberty Hotel is very close to there. If people want to put in the work and prepare ahead of time, we could even do a picnic on the Esplanade.

When: Some Saturday or Sunday, when the weather is nice.

Where: Community Boating. Lunch/brunch location TBD (suggestions/proposals welcome!).

How many people can come: Only 6-7 people fit on a Sonar, so I can only take 5-6 people at a time. If we can find another person who has a membership (and has the proper rating) at CBI then we can take more people. If not, then I could take 5-6 people sailing before lunch, then 5-6 people after lunch, so maximum of 12 people get to sail. If you want to join us just for lunch, and pass on the sailing, that's totally fine.

Who can come: You should know how to swim. At least enough to survive for 5 minutes in the water in case you fall in, while I turn the boat around and come to get you.

Logistics: For directions, other info, consult CBI website:
http://www.community-boating.org/

Best way to get there is by T - Red Line MGH/Charles stop. If you have to drive, you can park at the Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary parking lot. $7 to park there if I get your ticket validated at CBI. I don't know how many tickets I'm permitted to validate so please arrange a carpool if you're coming by car.

To bring: beverages and snacks to enjoy while floating along on the Charles enjoying the view of Boston. Sunblock. A padlock, so you can stow stuff you don't want to get wet in day lockers.

And check back periodically - since this is a weather dependent event, it might happen with not much in the way of advance warning.

Sorry I missed it. I couldn't find their parking lot. I drove 50 mins to get to downtown, drove around the river another 30 mins trying to find their parking lot and couldn't find it. So I turned around and went home....:( :( next time I will try taking T.

Sorry to hear that. The NEEEI parking lot is a bit tricky to find. It's better to take the T.

Just want to confirm that the 5:30 time slot works for me. Thanks for organizing, John!

      May 17, 2013

  • John

    Please respond here for polls:

    1) Instead of sailing at 2:30, what about pushing it back to 3, or 3:30? This would give people more time to check out the Japan Spring Festival.

    2) How many people could sail later in the afternoon? 5 or 5:30? Basically 2 hours after the 1st afternoon session, whenever that ends up being. If we can get enough people who are willing to sail later in the afternoon, then we could squeeze in 3 groups this Sunday. So more people on the waiting list get to sail. And then we could go out for dinner or beers afterwards.

So let me know if you could sail at 1) 3/3:30 and at 2) 5/5:30.

Also let me know which time slot (10am/3pm/5pm) you prefer, and which one(s) you just can't make.

This is unfortunately a bit complicated with lots of people and time slots, so some of you may not get your preferred time, or may not even get to sail this time. I apologize for that in advance and I promise there will be more sailing in the summer.

    1 · May 15, 2013

    • George C.

I prefer 3/3:30 slot if that's possible. I plan to check out the Japanese festival in the late morning. Thanks in advance.

Hi John, was just wondering if we could put it on the following weekend. Seems like its going to be congested and hard to get to.

    May 11, 2013

    • John

I'm going to be busy/out of town/unavailable the next 3 weekends. I will do more sailing meetups later on in the spring/summer as well, but I think it's better to go ahead with this meetup for those people who can make it to the boathouse this Saturday. Although I think you're right that it will be extra hard to get there that day. I highly recommend people NOT try to drive in that day. Park somewhere else and take the T in. And plan on the T being extra crowded, so give yourself some more time to get there.

FYI, about EarthFest security measures on the Esplanade on 5/18:

An Important Message From The Esplanade Association On Saturday, May 18th, access to the Charles River Esplanade will be limited due to security precautions in place for the Earthfest2013 event that will be taking place that day.

While we encourage you to visit Earthfest we would like you to be aware of the following measures that are being put into place: 1. The area between Union Boat Club and Clarendon St. will be totally shut down between 8am and 9:30am.

    2. After 9:30am (until event is over) everyone (park users, joggers, bikers, walkers, etc. included) will be required to go through security checkpoints.

In addition, the Fiedler Bridge will be closed all day

You can visit the 92.9 Earthfest website for more information and updates

    Hi John,
Thanks so much for organizing, but sadly I cannot make the 18th, due to a conference so I will be missing this again! Hope to catch up soon. Thank you again.

    May 10, 2013

  • John

Weather looks miserable for tomorrow, so I'm rescheduling this to next Sat, 5/18. Rather than cancel this and start a new meetup, I'm changing the date on this one, so people who've RSVP'd keep their place in the queue.

PLEASE NOTE: I have prior plans for next Sat in the afternoon, so I can't stay past 2pm. So rather than 10am & 2:30pm groups, next Saturday it'll be 10am & 12pm groups. That is, IF YOU ARE IN THE AFTERNOON GROUP, BE THERE BY NOON, NOT 2:30.

    May 10, 2013

  • John

Btw if this is postponed, it'll probably be moved to next Saturday, 5/18. Unfortunately I can only sail in the morning that day - I have prior plans in the afternoon. And I'm out of town the next 3 weekends. So people in the afternoon group: could you guys do this on a weekday, after work? You'd need to be able to get to the boathouse by 5, 5:30.

    May 8, 2013

    • John

Actually never mind, I could probably do 2 groups - one at 10am and another at 12 noon. I'll just eat a late lunch.

      May 8, 2013

    • Hira

Hi John! As I had originally said I can do any Saturday but this one. If possible I would like to be an AUTO in for the next Saturday. Preferably the PM session unless you are doing only ONE (AM). It's tough luck to miss on two of these sailing meetups. Thanks for your continuous generosity.

Hi John for the 10 am cast off group, how long do you expect to be out on the water and back at dock? Thanks!

    May 7, 2013

    • John

Probably about 1.5 hours on the water. I think last time we were back on the dock by 12.

      May 8, 2013

  • John

I've been watching the forecast for Saturday, and it has been getting progressively worse. So this meetup will probably be cancelled, and rescheduled to a later date.

Since Boston weather can be very variable, I'm going to hold off on the final decision until Friday. So make sure you check here on Friday. I'll send out email notifications as well.

Rain or no rain, I still have to eat lunch, and it might as well be dim sum. So I'm NOT going to cancel dim sum for Saturday. China Pearl has a working roof, last time I checked. :P

  • Angel

I thought I said yes and was one of the first few responded (though there was no specific date yet then), wondering why it says my answer is "No" now? Anyway, I'd certainly be part of it.

    April 22, 2013

    • Steve

Angel you were a no show for the last sailing event. That is why we changed your RSVP to no. I sent you a message about this matter already.

      April 23, 2013

    • Angel

"No Show" was not true as I didn't receive any notification for whatever reason, neither did I receive the message. Anyway, it's understood now.

John is absolutely right... Meetup participants assume all risk and liability of personal injury including death. Even the most seasoned sailors would be unable to reach everyone immediately should the sail flips. Anyone participating in any water sports must at least be able to do the dead man float.
