Infrastructure Requirements and Options for Big Data solutions

Pursuant to our kick-off meeting, the group has decided that investigating the system infrastructure requirements and options needed for Big Data would be a great way for us to start with the basics.  One of our members suggested to have this session in his facility.  This would be great and we will see if we can confirm this option within a week.

In this session we will cover elastic cloud services, scalability, processing power, load balancing, database storage, buffering technics and other requirements for big data applications.

We will put together agenda.  Please submit your questions by next Wednesday so that we can investigate, and pull from our group's experiences, ways to answer them.

Thanks everyone for allowing me to introduce Unicage. If any of you can help me get in front of the data analytics people at the large area retailers such as CVS, Dunkin' Donuts, TJX or Staples, I can offer a 5% finder's fee on any revenue generated. Please contact me at [masked].

It was really refreshing to pull my head up from my little projects for a moment and see just how differently different folks are approaching big data problems.

Hi Thierry - (It's been a while since we last connected during your Lotus days...) Your email indicated that I was confirmed however I am traveling this week and will not be able to make it. I don't see a way to change my status as I don't see myself on the list... In any case, I'll look forward to attending a future event but please release my spot for someone on the waiting list. Hi Seth, Yes it has been a while. If you login, you should see "Your RSVP: Yes" and bellow a [change] button. That should do it. I have noticed that meet-up often logs us out. That could be why you don't see it. I look forward to seeing you soon. Thierry

I could do a quick intro with some Q&A in about 20 minutes. For anyone who's interested in more details we'll be doing some free training sessions in October.

      Sure!

I see more ppl RSVP'ed over the weekend. Good! I just need the last names from a few of you though:

    Giris, Rick, Uday

If you plan on coming to our meetup tomorrow, you MUST give me your last names today before 2PM EDT - the security groups at the lobby do not make exceptions here.

And thank you for those of you who sent me your last names (Jim C., Marik, Steve, VK). You guys are all set.

    September 23, 2013

    • Thierry H.

I sent you the latest list, but you are right about full names. I will send a mass email to the group with instructions to mail you their full names to be sure.

  • John L.

Thank you, Patrick, for forwarding the names of the attendees. One thing that's required and still missing is the last name of everyone coming to the event. I need last names from following attendees:

    Jim, Marik, Mitri, Steve, Uday

This is important because without the first and last name, the building security will not admit anyone.

    Thanks.

Thank you Marik, VK, Steve. You guys are all set.

Jim and Mitri: please reply with your last names as soon as you are able. I have until Monday morning to reply to the facility manager but I'd rather finish the process today. Thanks!

Hi Thierry, would you have a few minutes during the meeting for me to discuss Unicage? It's a Big Data tool from Japan that can scale easily without Hadoop or big iron.

    September 6, 2013

    • Thierry H.

Sure. I thinks that it would bring a different perspective and focused application. Let us know how much time you might need.

I just had a conversation with Patrick. What do you think about getting some one from Rackspace give a 20-30 presentation with QA about their architecture and options? If you think that it makes sense, I will ask Patrick to ask about it during his meeting with them tomorrow.

I have a contact at Joyent. They focus on high performance and real-time infrastructure. He keeps an eye on the local meetup scene and might be interested in giving a presentation. Happy to find out if someone can give me a timeframe.

Thanks Michael. I think that we will be aiming for 24th. Location still up in the air. Perhaps our friend at Paypal can help.

I really have a lot to contribute to this subject but I'll be in Japan on the 18th... Too bad you can't make it the 16th or even the following week would be better!

    September 5, 2013

    • Jim

Wow, thanks for accommodating me. I'm only in Japan Sept 17-20, so anytime outside of those dates is fine.

      September 5, 2013

    • Steve

If Jim has a lot to contribute, and given that we would like to get some solution provider presentations, maybe a delay would be in order. If we want to continue to build momentum, maybe we can slip in a different topic for the 18th. I do not have any particular topics in mind (other than infrastrutcure :), but maybe we can talk about the types of "big data" databases and analytics tools that are available and that people have experience with (as the logical next step after infrastructure).
