Infrastructure Requirements and Options for Big Data solutions PART II

This is the continuation of the last meeting. We are aiming for the week of the 21st. Until we finalize the date, we will remain true to our approach and seek a presentation from an infrastructure provider and/or a presentation addressing a real-life Big Data architecture. We clearly understand that Big Data solutions are widely diversified in the time they need to be executed, the nature of the data, and the processing power versus amount of records to crunch. With this in mind, I am asking to you to step forward with any recommendations or cases you might want to present.

People, if you are not attending - please RSVP No at least a day before the evnt so that whoever on waiting list could plan accordingly. I now see myself as RSVP yes because of few backouts in last minute.

Sorry John, I noticed last minute after reaching home, as meetup website is blocked in my office. Will try to come next event.

It was good to meet other folks interested in Big Data. However, I don't recall us discussing any infrastructure requirements. Or is it because I left before everyone else did ?

You are right. The topic came up in fragmented ways but was also addressed at the end in the context of data architecture and elastic infrastructure to mitigate value with cost when a systematic design flaw could cause automated resource allocation. I used our recent issue with our table locking causing delays that could have lead to higher elastic cloud processing fees had we not reviewed our design.

Excellent meetings with great discussions in that team

Are the decks for these meetups being posted anywhere?

Thank you all for coming to the meet-up. The discussion was varied and still demonstrative of the diversity of what Big Data can be in different context. I wanted to let you know that I did not fire my developers last night ;-) They did fix the problem and the site works well now. Here is a link to the Big Data page. Feel free to register, set alerts and share. http://www.tweetzup.com/bigdata I will be putting the agenda for the next meeting. We will try to do it before Thanksgiving. The preliminary focus will be an infrastructure provide presentation, Big Data algorithms, and visualization.

    Feel free to contribute.

Sorry for the late notice guys, both business and personal conflicts arose today that will not allow me to attend the meetup this evening. I hope it is not too late to add someone in the queue to replace me. I am looking forward to the next meeting...if someone takes notes tonight, please pass them on :)

We have a good attendance. Don't worry and thanks for the notice. We will catch you later.

Call for presentations. We have a full house for this Tuesday's meeting. The format is based on use-case/solution presentations. We are still in the infrastructure requirement discussion. We go beyond balancing storage and CPU requirements. We need to take into account the the preparation and understanding of the outcome to prescribe the right infrastructure. The choice of the right infrastructure also involves ways to migrate, integrate and know if the data are structured or not. Algorithms can play an essential role when we are thinking of the Big Data that transcend relational databases with known keys. Often we have to think of sampling and simple batch processing that lead to new data that is better suited for Big Data analytics. If you find that you have an experience to share about these topics in the context of choosing and building an infrastructure that has helped you in your solution, please step forward to lead a presentation or/and conversation.

I hope someone shares notes. I'll be at Strata.

Unfortunately, I will be out of town at our distributed systems conference - RICON(www.ricon.io) on that day.

Please note that due to scheduling conflicts we are planning to move the meeting to next week. Awaiting logistics and feedback.

I should be able to reserve a lecture room (whiteboard, projector, chalkboard) at Bentley (175 Forest Street, Waltham MA, location link below.) Bentley is located just off of 128/95. Parking is free. https://www.google.com/maps/preview#!q=Bentley+University%2C+Forest+Street%2C+Waltham%2C+MA&data=!4m15!2m14!1m13!1s0x89e39d36c9ba1a47%3A0x861ff9c80e2690aa!3m8!1m3!1d24831!2d[masked]!3d[masked]!3m2!1i1436!2i809!4f13.1!4m2!3d[masked]!4d[masked]

I'm fine the week of 10/21 and 10/28... I can also offer a location in Back Bay to hold the event with underground parking for a flat rate of $12.

Week of the 21st is good for me. The following week is the Strata conf and Hadoop World in NYC. Some people may be heading off for that.
