Gotta take a "P"-town ride - advanced riders only

  • DATE IS JUST A HOLDER UNTIL I CAN CONFIRM I HAVE THE TIME OFF.  LOOKING FOR INTERESTED PARTIES AT THIS POINT.

During a ride the subject of riding from Boston to Provincetown and taking the ferry back arose. So, I mapped out a route that we could ride but there a few catches since the mileage would be 140 in one day.

    1. We would have to leave Boston by 6am (that means a 5:30 start)
    2. We would have to keep an avg. cruising speed of around 17 mph (mid 20's cruising speed)
    3. We would have to be organized and work as a team to maintain the speed without burning out
    4. You would need to take into account parking in Boston (?) and the ferry ride home, $60 (https://secure4.gatewayticketing.com/BostonHarborCruises/shop/ViewItems.aspx?CG=EXCR&C=PFOW)
    5. I believe the last ferry leaves at 8:30pm so we wont be back in Boston till after 9ish

    6. ALL RIDERS SHOULD HAVE THE ROUTE ON A GPS OR PHONE APP.  We will slow the pace down if needed but we can't afford to continually stop to regroup.
    7. If someone with a GPS or Phone app. wants to lead a second group that would be FANTASTIC!

I have potential dates of September 7th if we were to do the ride before the Pain in the Mass or Columbus Day Weekend (12th).

Need to change the date of this ride as I just got my sons deck hockey schedule and he has a game on saturday and since I am the coach I kinda need to be there.

Yes, I understand the distance and pace, and that this ride is considerably above my experience level. I did the 70 mile south shore ride recently (hosted by Jeffrey) and had no trouble keeping up with the 17mph pace; the question is just if I can maintain that pace for twice the distance. In the event that it's apparent to me that I can't, I can bail halfway and take the train back from Buzzards Bay. My family lives on the Cape, so I can also ride to my parent's house and take the bus back. Either way, I have several fall-back options.

I'm comfortable with drafting and am learning about cycling nutrition. I would like to give this ride a shot. But if you're not comfortable taking a novice along, I won't be offended.

Its not a comfort level but more of a responsibility level that I have as an organizer. I would suggest that between now and the date we do this ride you try and do at least 2 century rides. If you have the route and understand that you could be dropped but you have a plan if you do then you are more than welcome.

Boston to Ptown is what my other group does for the MS150 over two days. It's a great ride but in one day should be reserved for riders in top form especially at that pace. Peter, have you checked the times for the ferry return?

I actually read the schedule wrong. The ferry leaves at 4 after Sept. 22. Leaves at 8:30pm before Sept. 22. Might have to rethink this one.

Rudy, I noticed on your profile that you were an intermediate cyclists. Want to make sure you understand the pace and the miles (140) that we will be riding. In order to get there at a reasonable time we need to maintain avg. pace of 17mph which means our "cruising" speed will be in the mid 20's. As the event organizer I just want to make sure you understand the what to expect so you are able to enjoy the ride.

I'm leaning towards making the date for this ride the 12th. Nice way to wrap up the summer.

Here is the route I was thinking. Feel free to make suggestions as I mapped out the most direct route.
