Happy Chinese New Year! Let's have Dim Sum at China Pearl and watch the parade!

Let's have Dim Sum at China Pearl and then see the Chinese New Year festivities in Boston's Chinatown.

Chinatown is celebrating their New Year and hosting their annual Chinese Lion Dance Parade. 2013 is the year of the snake.

I would typically schedule this activity much later, however due to the New Year festivities, I am expecting crowds, traffic, and parking delays and therefore scheduling this event a bit earlier than usual.

The parade and festivities are expected to start around 12noon, and therefore we should meet for Dim Sum a little bit before to avoid the crowds and long lines.

The meeting time for this event is 10:30am.

Please plan ahead and expect delays in traffic, parking, and public transportation delays. Please give yourself extra time to travel to this event and to arrive at China Pearl at 10:30am.

If you are late, I can not guarantee that we will be able to join the group.

This should be a very pleasant event.

In order for this event to be successful, we will need to be organized and follow some rules.

  • Rule number 1 - Please show-up if you reserved "yes"

I will be sending reminder emails asking you to reconfirm your reservations. I will be putting special efforts in reconfirming everyone's attendance the week prior to the event.  If you do not reconfirm your attendance, I will assume that you are no longer coming and therefore remove you from the attendance roster and give your space to the next person.

****Please do not reserve "yes" if you are a "maybe".

If you are a "maybe", please write "maybe" in the comments field for the event. Reserving "yes" when you are a "maybe" is misleading and is taking a space from someone who is definitely attending.

  • Rule Number 2 - Be on time!

For this activity is group food sharing activity, it very important that you be on time for we all need to be at the same time and place.

Please plan ahead and allow yourself extra time to travel or park in Chinatown. I strongly recommend that you travel by pubic transportation, the T (subway).

When we have a large group, please understand that it is not fair to ask those who have arrived early to wait for late comers.

Most importantly, it is not fair for the restaurant to hold empty seats and lose business for latecomers or for people who fail to show-up.  Lateness and no-shows gives me and the Meetup groups a bad reputation which may affect our ability to make future reservations. As it is, Meetup groups already have a bad reputation at many establishments and some places will not even take Meetup reservations.

If you are late, please understand that we can not wait for you and can not guarantee that you will be able to join the group.

  • Rule Number 3 - Please be financially prepared to pay for your meal including taxes and tip.

The only other expectations that I have is for people to have fun and be respectful and be friendly towards one another.

What is Dim Sum?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dim_sum

http://chinesefood.about.com/od/diningout/p/dim_sum.htm

To summarize, Dim Sum is offers a menu of a variety of bite-size food and dumplings.

The fun is in ordering as a group and in sharing Dim Sum orders.

The result, the group gets to sample all sorts of delicious and some exotic food items.

The best part is the price, the bill always has always seems low at the end of the meal especially considering all the food that was consumed.

The exact price will depend on what exactly is ordered and the number of people in the group. The price could range from $8 to $15 per person including tip.

Sounds like you all had a great time! Wish I could have been there. Coming in from Beverly in the snow would have been a bit dicey!

I had such a great time! The people were fun and the food was delicious. I just loved that sections of the Chinese Lion Dance parade come in and danced through the China Pearl - several times! Thanks, Joana, for organizing this.

Thank you, you Dim Sum Die hards, for braving through the snowy weather to attend this event. I had so much fun. The food was great. The atmosphere was quite animated with the various Lions dance parading throughout the restaurant. Also, we enjoyed parading ourselves through Chinatown to watch the other Lion dances. And the after Dim-sum coffee talk was very educational and entertaining.

Looks like the Orange Line is still running normally (but check the MBTA website before you leave)

    February 17, 2013

  • Joana

If you are looking for ideas for parking. Sullivan train station has a parking lot and the prices are very reasonable, $6 or $7. This station is on the Orange Line and few stops from Chinatown. If you know the area a little, people have told me that they can find free street parking. It is a Sunday, and the meters will definitely be free. Just an idea.

    February 16, 2013

    • Tom F.

I park for free there often. Weekends and evenings are the best times to find free on street parking near the station.

      February 16, 2013

    • Mike N.

It looks like the orange line will be running to Oak Grove Station. Plenty of cheap parking there too (but double check the MBTA website first)

      February 16, 2013

  • Tom F.

I'm sorry, but the forecasters have upped the amounts of snow on the North Shore (6-8 inches). I'm going to have to cancel. I'll see you folks soon!

    February 16, 2013

  • Joana

I called the restaurant and the New Year festivities are still on. They warned that it is going to be busy and they will only seat us when we all all there. If you are late, there is a possibility that we can not wait for you, so please plan ahead. Even with the little bit of snow, this should be fun.

    1 · February 16, 2013

  • Joana

We are only 2 to 4 inches of snow in Boston, I hope you all can all still make it.

    February 5, 2013

  • Joana

Thank you to all who have reconfirmed your attendance for 2/17. If you have not reconfirmed for 2/17, please reconfirm soon. If you are no longer able to attend, please change your reservation to "not attending". We have a long waiting list, and I would like to know if you are able to attend. I understand that there is still a lot of time until 2/17, and you can certainly change your reservation before then, however I just wanted to have the most accurate list as of today so I can plan and allow other on the waiting list to plan. If there is still so much interest, I may increase the reservation. Regardless, I need to have an accurate attendance count. Remember, meeting time is 10:30am sharp!
Last year, I also hosted this event and if you arrived after 10:30am, you will get lost in the crowd. Thank you! I hope you can all still come. Happy Lunar New Year!

    February 5, 2013

  • Joana

I just increased the reservation to 24.
The restaurant was able to reserve us two tables of 12.
If you are on the waiting list and would like to attend, please send me a message and I will add you to the attendance list.

I am so sorry to change the date. When I posted this event, there was information that the parade and festival was going to be different than the Chinese New Year.

The Chinese New Year falls on 2/10, however the parade is on 2/17.

Please double check your schedules and reconfirm your attendance. Thank you. If I do not hear from you, I will assume that you are not attending and will give your spot to someone who has confirmed from the waiting list. I am so sorry for this inconvenience. And a big thank you for Valerie, who saved this event, by informing me that the correct day for the parade is on 2/17. I owe you one!

Please reconfirm here that you can atend this event on 2/17. I can attend on 2/17 and you? Thank you!

    January 30, 2013

  • Joana

This event seems to be very popular. I am thinking about increasing this reservation to 3 tables which equals 30 people. If I increase the limit, those who are on the wait-list will be automatically added to the reservation. I ask everyone, including the waitlisted, to please double check your schedules and make any changes to your reservation status. If you are no longer able to attend, please change your reservation to not-attending. If are on the wait-list and have made other plans for this date/time, please remove yourself from the waitlist. Thank you!

Jen, I am so glad that I am helping make your dream come true. :)

    1 · January 11, 2013

  • Joana

If you are a "maybe" please write "maybe" in this comments field. Reserving "yes" is for people who are definitely attending and causes others to be bumped onto the waiting list. This seems to be a popular event, and we already have 3 people on the waitlist. I just wanted to explain why I moved some "maybes" out of the "yes" list. If the waiting list grows much longer, I will most likely increase the number of people for this event.
