56 UP

“Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.”

Starting in 1964 with Seven Up, The Up Series has explored this Jesuit maxim. The original concept was to interview 14 children from diverse backgrounds from all over England, asking them about their lives and their dreams for the future. Every seven years, renowned director Michael Apted, a researcher for Seven Up, has been back to talk to them, examining the progression of their lives.

From cab driver Tony to schoolmates Jackie, Lynn and Susan and the heart-breaking Neil, as they turn 56 more life-changing decisions and surprising developments are revealed.

An extraordinary look at the structure of life in the 20th century, The Up Series is, according to critic Roger Ebert, “an inspired, almost noble use of the film medium. Apted penetrates to the central mystery of life.”

Notes:

  • Showtime is confirmed for 3.15pm
  • The movie is being screened in the Goldscreen.  This is the very small 14-seat theater.   You need to buy your tickets IMMEDIATELY!
  • We'll gather in the lobby afterwards (I'll have a meetup sign) and go to Zaftig's for a post-movie discussion.

I agree with Bob. And another BTW to follow up different conversation. "Call the Midwife" Season 1 will be repeated on Channel 2 over the next two weekends, and Season2 begins March 31 at 8PM.

A rich film.... each person's life plays out like a story. And a good discussion afterwards.

BTW, the film star's name that I was trying to remember (and did on the ride home) was Anna May Wong, and the silent film was Piccadilly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An...

Thank's Bob. I remember seeing a documentury on her. Being Chinese-American (my parents were from China), I'm happy to see more Asian actors/actresses in "real" roles today.

    Hi All,

For now I can't open this meetup to any more members or guests but I hope to do so tomorrow or on Thursday. I've temporarily closed the meetup in case the Coolidge decides to show the movie in the tiny 14-seat Goldscreen theater. The 3.30 pm showings since last Sunday have been in the The Screening Room that seats 45 and I'm hoping that will remain the same for this Sunday. The evening showings have been in the Goldscreen.

The Coolidge will announce its schedule tomorrow (probably) or Thursday. If the movie is going to be in The Screening Room, then I can re-open the meetup to a few more people but if it's in the Goldscreen theater it will remain closed. Either way we'll need to scramble for tickets and buy them IMMEDIATELY they go on sale!! http://www.coolidge.org/.
