The animation of the waltzing character was amazing.
Sometimes the animation reminded me of the old "Johnny Quest" show on TV, how the lines were crisp except around the mouth which seemed watery as the little tiny lips moved in synch with the dialog. Sometimes that watery quality was evident in this movie. I loved the visual pleasure of this movie. The scene (repeated) where the boys walk from the sea to the beach and put on (their?) clothes. Well, I couldn't place that scene chronologically in the action. Can someone help me out? The main character (I forget his name) is one of the boys. Why are they emerging from the sea? What happened previous to that scene? |

My take on this repeated scene was the nakedness and innocence (emerging from water) of these teenagers as they enter modern warfare and its horrors- more of a 'dream' collected memory more than anything that actually took place.

Oh, yes, I see, that's very perceptive. And the repeating of the scene was very effective.

I found the water scene the opposite of innocence. The figures seemed numb and the colors were garish to me. I didn't find it artful at all. In fact, the whole premise that this soldier couldn't remember what he did for 20 years is pretty crazy. The wholesale murder of civilians at Sabra and Shatila was publicized at the time, even in the United States. There was a fact-finding commission in Israel at the time to investigate it. The whole movie just didn't "ring true" to me. At the same time, "saving face" may be the prelude to telling the truth, as the Israeli "winter soldiers" are doing now about the genocide in Gaza. These guys are real heroes to speak up.
