Volume 1 of the tetrology is divided into two novellas. Part 1: Too Many Damn Secrets -- As George Abbott grows up, age 4-13, he is immersed in many secrets within his extended family, most related to the Healing and other extraordinary skills of his great-grandmother, a woman who has lived in a mental hospital for over sixty years. At age 12 George is terrified to learn that in a few years he will acquire special skills of his own. Part 2: An Unwelcome Challenge -- At age 15 George inherits his great-grandmother's Empathy skill, enabling him to read and change what others are feeling. He also learns that he can acquire new skills (ordinary and special) from others. A new friend, a psychiatrist, challenges George to find a way to use his special skills to save civilization from widely predicted inevitable environmental catastrophes. George resists committing to such global intervention in others' lives, but agrees to seek a plan that others might use for this purpose.
After working on a YA near future hard SciFi/SciFant (genetics) tetrology for 10 years, I have recently abandoned the project. I was in a writer's group that met irregularly about one a month, but when it disbanded, I lost my motivation to write.
The people who attend are enthusiastic talking about SciFi and writing topics. It is a friendly social atmosphere.
