Christopher Columbus Park, Downtown Boston
(Aquarium T stop or walk from Park Street on Red Line)

Gather en masse to participate in positive attention-getting and imagination-catching activities. Travel from community events to the downtown location will be an important part of the day. Costumes, floats and theatrical events will draw attention to 350's goals. This is a free event. Co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Sierra Club.

Photo at 3:50pm rain or shine in front of the sandbag wall with a banner calling on world leaders to get us back to 350 and to pass a fair, ambitious and binding climate treaty this year.

A race to build a wall of sandbags to protect Boston from rising sea levels and stronger storms! Beach and water games! Participatory climate theater! Relay racing!! Flooding Station: learn about what sea level rise and higher storm surges will mean for Boston

Costumes & theatrics: Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear water-related costumes. It's not too early to plan your outfit for the day! Plan how you will get to the Boston event and what you will do to engage people on the way. The idea is to have 350 everywhere on October 24th.

Be a part of the Big Picture campaign and help build the grassroots base President Obama needs to turn the tide on climate change.

President Obama sees the Big Picture. A few weeks ago his administration took great strides toward securing our clean energy future and addressing global warming.

You are a critical piece of the Big Picture and our country's clean energy future!

Come to the Massachusetts Chapter House Party on Climate change and get the latest on national legislation while meeting other environmentalists.

Come join us, chat and socialize, and participate in a Nationwide Sierra Club conference call and discussion with Sierra Club leaders on how we can move forward towards clean energy and averting climate change. The call begins at 8:00.

BYOB and a snack to share.

Also get to see Jamaica Plain Cohousing, a "new old-fashioned neighborhood" (a condo development with plenty of common facilities and a community-oriented spirit) completed and moved into in 2005. See the energy-saving features and community-encouraging architecture, and meet some of the residents.

Only members of this Group can view the location for this Meetup

The latest on transportation reform and revenue from the transportation equity perspective. What's happening with the stand off between Governor Patrick and the Legislature? Sales tax? gas tax? meals tax? at the moment the Senate has said the are all on the table. Will it be enough to give the MBTA the millions it needs to keep the service we currently enjoy at a price we can afford?

On the Move Director Bob Terrell will update us on how the transportation reform legislation and the House proposed sales tax interacts with revenue proposals. (Due ~ May 14

Preserve New England's 400-Year Industry and Bring an End to Overfishing

Living in New England we hear a lot about overfishing but still can go to a restaurant and get great seafood. What's going on? What is the proposal to address overfishing and What can we do about it? don't know what the impact of it

Greg Wells of the Pew Environment Group gives a brief overview of the new proposal to reinvigorate the New England fisheries through the proposed Amendment 16 to the groundfish management plan (see www.newenglandfishing.org).

The regular Greater Boston Group Executive committee monthly meeting will begin at 7pm.

New England's groundfish fishery has driven the region's economy and culture for centuries. But today it is in serious trouble. Decades of overfishing and mismanagement have led to severe declines in fish populations, continued restrictions on fishing effort, decreases in revenue, and the loss of our traditional fishing fleet.

With the support of forward-thinking commercial fishing organizations, the New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) is developing a new approach called sectors to replace the current failed fishery management system. Sectors are community-based, fishermen run co-ops. Sectors follow three simple guidelines:

* They implement science-based catch limits to promote rebuilding of fish populations and prevent overfishing;

* They incorporate monitoring so fishermen and regulators know exactly how much is being caught so that fishing stops once catch limits have been reached; and

* They are allocated their own share of the annual catch limit; while respecting catch limits, sectors provide fishermen with the flexibility to set their own fishing guidelines so they can run their businesses more efficiently and profitably.

On June 23-25, federal fisheries managers will vote on adopting sector management and annual catch limits for the groundfish fishery.

We'll take action to make sure the National Marine Fisheries Service and NEFMC knows that the public supports sector management and annual catch limits that hold all fishermen accountable for their catch.
