Boston VR Devs March Hackathon

VR devs, assemble!  Our next hack-day will be at Tufts' computer science building on Saturday, March 26th. We'll get together for a day of building VR, spitballing new ideas, sharing code, swapping feedback, and generally making cool stuff. Anybody ready to write code, craft environments, explore VR art, hack on hardware, or otherwise build VR is invited to come!

Bring your own laptop & gear!  We'll have a few Vives set up on dedicated PCs available for people to develop with, but otherwise you'll want to bring a machine to work on.

There'll be a Unity/Cardboard/Vive workshop in the morning, mainly intended for Tufts students who join us and want to get up to speed on VR dev.

The RSVP cost of the event covers a big pizza order for lunch.

DIRECTIONS:
By T: Take the Red Line to Davis Square, and then the 94 or 96 bus to Tufts.
By car: GPS your way to 161 College Ave, Medford, then the Cousens lot, directly across from Halligan hall, is free!
Once you're there: Rooms 102 & 108 are to left when you enter the building.

Henry Zhou is hosting us at Tufts -- many thanks to Henry!!

Hey all, we found a black North Face jacket in room 102 which had a set of Honda Car Keys, a BSC card, and a Hubway keychain in the pocket. There was also a receipt from Dunkin donuts for 12 donuts and an iced coffee. Let me know if it's you! I'll be holding onto to it in the meantime.

Thanks again to everyone for coming! :)

The Hackathon today was awesome. Really impressed by what VR can do and the passion and ideas of everyone today. Bravo. Perfect event.

Sorry folks, while I'd love to go, I'll have to drop out today. Schedule conflict prevents the person I was supposed to be working with from attending. And I'm swamped with things to do myself.

I want to get my hands on vive! Actually try to do something with it....are there pcs there for developing or just for demos?

    March 25, 2016

    • Jono F.

Excellent! There'll be at least a Vive or two (+PCs) there, and the idea is to build stuff on them! But still bring your own laptop, so we can share the Vive PCs for anyone to test their stuff (using USB drives).

Parking update: it's free! Henry confirmed that Cousens lot, directly across from Halligan hall, is open and free for the weekend.

    Hello,

Is it possible to attend morning session to learn and get speed up on VR development. I am not a Tufts student. Please let me know.

We'll probably start the workshop between 10:15 and 10:30. See you tomorrow!

Don't forget our big regular meeting this Wednesday! http://www.meetup.com/Boston-Virtual-Reality/events/229122433/

If you are new to VR, and never did a hackathon, you might find the general meeting better for you. Or just come to both!

Awesome to see so many people ready to hack! I'm planning to bring one a vive to practice on, as well.

Does anyone have access to a Hololens I can try for an hour? The dev kit is $3K and I just want to see if the hardware is worth playing with or not.

Wish I could be there unfortunately School work has piled up this week. Hope to be at the next one.

For those of you who would like to integrate 360 video into your projects, I will have demo footage available for your immediate use. Video specs are currently 4096x2048 at 30 frames per second. We can create other dimensions and framerates on the fly if needed. You will be able to copy and take this footage with you to experiment with as well. I will have my cameras and software with me if anyone has questions about how you would create your own, specific 360 video for future projects. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

    Hi there -
I am more of a VR/AR designer than a developer (working with several organizations on VR solutions but don't have many developers on board yet and plan to learn Unreal Engine myself). Could I come to the hackathom to sit in/listen and network? Thanks!

    March 21, 2016

    • Jono F.

Hey Emily, absolutely! We tend to be pretty laid back and do a mix of building things and also just talking shop.
