Dear Norrie: re your question about comparative literature and political economics at Yale, I was (am) interested in changing the world and reading great literature, which changes it as well as grass roots strategies. I look forward to being able to come to the Shakespeare meetup.

647? How is this place accessed?

it's easy to miss--I'll clarify it for future meetings. Glad you got there.

I'm here standing at eastern bank...what's the deal?

    March 11, 2013

  • Francis

Just a suggestion: if bad arrives at worse, don't forget there is an app - the Complete Works of Shakespeare, for Iphone and Android. In that way you are always semi- ready. But it would be good to agree on a play beforehand and scheme over it prior to the meeting...

I'm thinking about taking a play and just going with it. We can decide which one tomorrow, but now that we've started on the tragicomedies, why not continue with Cymbeline? If you liked TWT, you might love Cymbeline. It could give us some insight into what was on Shakespeare's mind as he ended his career in the theatre.

    March 10, 2013

    • Francis

Cymbeline is good. A bit on the obscure side. Probably be a first for many out there.

Is it pretentious to spell theatre with an re?

    March 10, 2013

    • Francis

That's how I spell it. I still spell "cheque" ...I guess it's how far you are willing to go to retain what you grew up with and feel comfortable doing... I often don't care much about popular...since the crowd often disappoints....although taking into consideration public censure is important sometimes.

How about bringing something from Shakespeare that you either love or don't understand. Perhaps we'd learn to love it or help you understand it (or maybe not).

Are we going to read anything specific?

    March 6, 2013

    • norrie e.

Why don't you bring a favorite speech and read it for us?

      March 6, 2013

    • norrie e.

It would be great if everyone could bring something AND we can talk about the next play.

Once I was chid for reading only Shakespeare; they said I needed to broaden my horizon. They failed to see that Shakespeare was The Horizon after which all other horizons take their being and importance - I mean in the world of secular literature.

      There's everything in Shakespeare

Hope it wasn't too unclear: The two meetings posted ("Brush Up" and "Laugh, Cry") refer to the one on March 11th. There's only one.

      Evenings after 7?

      March 5, 2013

    • Francis

I find seven o'clock a bit late when doing something of immense joy; before you know it it's nine, and some of us commute long ways. Five, six , seven

Judging from the comments, Friday seems better. Any thoughts?

Hope the day is OK for most people. I'd love to see a lot of people after the long break. We welcome the aspiring actor and the incurable ham. This is for anyone who ever wanted to know what makes Shakespeare great.

So we are meeting at Eastern Bank? Do I need to bring anything or is there anything helpful to share since this is my first meeting..?

      February 21, 2013

    • norrie e.

You can bring anything you like-but nothing is required. Yes, it's the bank--odd, but true.
