R for Beginners

Training class similar to those held by the Python and PhP Meetup Groups where a sample project is used to help folks learn R. The Python/PhP tutorials have ranged from 3-hour sessions to Saturday workshops. Participants would bring their own laptops (albeit a workaround should be available for those without, e.g. sharing, or another facility).

Agenda:

  1. Pizza and networking (BYOB)
  2. R for Beginners - Guided session for learning R

It's a really wonderful thing that people put in their time and energy to sharing what they've learned about R. I got a lot from it, especially the directions to useful sites and the different interfaces.

I was hoping for a more 'follow-along' tutorial structure. But there was some great content presented.

The basic content was good and very appropriate for beginners. The opportunity to ask questions was helpful. I was hoping for more of a hands on experience.

    Very good.
I got there late, but liked what I saw.
I'd like to find where all the investment management R programs are stored.

Thank you all for taking the time to present.

The team was fantastic, especially Josh Paulson and John Muller. Josh has a very quick ad pedagogical mind, putting himself in the mind of those that listen. John had prepared a nice framework, and spoke very well, with a very positive attitude. The meeting was both technically great and an energy booster

Is it possible to have another session soon (for those on the waiting list and others unable to make it on Tuesday but VERY INTERESTED)?

We got our usual spot at IBM and moved the date to Tuesday 13 September. If anyone is interested in helping organize meeting material, please email me.

Hello everyone! Great idea with the meetup. I know a great venue that could serve well for this purpose. I know some guys at Bocoup - they have a hacker space in South Boston which is easily accessible from South Station (5 min. walk), and can fit about 100 people. I don't think they charge a fee for open-source meetups. Would you like me to get more details and check if it's free?

We don't have a confirmed location for this event (yet) and are looking into alternatives. Also the date might have to change due to booking a location. Will update as soon as we can. :-)

My bad, I thought the date change would set a conversation rolling.
    Cheers, Matt

Probably in the future it may be best to leave the date blank, and then have folks discuss a date in the comments, or the meetup organizers set the date / ask folks what dates work best, and then set a date. Or perhaps there is a better approach. For now, please do not change the date, and also please consider the event date and location to still be TBD. Thanks!!!

Agree that a later date would work better for preparation, and for providing time for folks to sign-up. Maybe best to pencil in September 7th for now.

I think it might take us a little longer than the end of July to establish a suitable line-up of material and people to instruct. Perhaps we should shoot for September or October and just replace our monthly meeting with this session?
This would make it either 7 September or 5 October.
