President, Boston Area Beekeepers Association

Melrose, MA
Hometown: Vermont

Organizer since:

Why are you joining the Boston Area Beekeepers Association?

I originally joined this Meetup group when my husband and I were new beekeepers looking to connect with others with more experience. With 3 years of beekeeping under my belt I am still eager to connect with other bee enthusiasts, and am particularly interested in leading hands-on educational visits to my hives with youth and other curious members of the public.

Do you know anything about Beekeeping? If so, please describe experience:

My parents kept bees when I was growing up in rural VT but I was too young to gain anything more than a respect for the insect & love of their honey. I've learned a lot during the past 3 years of tending several hives, and love to share my passion with others - in the apiary, on a blog I co-manage ( and in classrooms throughout the Boston area.

Do you have a place where you can keep bees?

I tend two Langstroth hives in a community garden near my apartment and with luck the roof of our triple-decker may soon be home to a swarm in a homemade Top Bar Hive.

Are you interested in helping to create an active bee community in Boston?

Yes! I helped coordinate Boston's 1st-3rd annual Tour de Hives and am very interested in community outreach and youth engagement in beekeeping and ecological education. I co-manage the Boston Beekeepers' facebook page ( and enjoy connecting with other bee enthusiasts whenever I can. I am also coordinating the re-creation of a community teaching apiary at Boston Nature Center in Mattapan. Please contact me if you are interested in hosting a hive there.

Do you have any good honey recipes to share?

Simply delicious salad dressing - 2 parts oil to 1 part cider vinegar, w/ a generous helping of honey + salt, pepper & garlic to taste (blend & refrigerate). It's great on green leafy salads, grapefruit, avocados, or secretly sipped straight from the jar ;)

I strive to leverage my beekeeping knowledge to engage, educate and enchant others, especially youth, with the fascinating world of honeybees.
