Lexington, Bedford, Concord, and Lincoln off-road 18 miles

This 18-mile ride is 90% on dedicated bike paths, including part of the Minuteman Bikeway, the entirety of the Reformatory Branch Trail, and the entirety of the Battle Road trail. It is possible to make a small side trip (quarter-mile round-trip) to the Old North Bridge, a National Historic Site of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The Battle Road is the actual path that was traveled for troops going to Concord.

Reformatory Branch Trail and the Battle Road trail are both unpaved, however, they are graded and in very good condition and suitable for hybrids. Road bikes are not suitable for this ride. Please bring a mountain bike or hybrid.

Parking is in a municipal lot next between the Lexington police station and the Minuteman Bikeway, corner of Fletcher Street & Woburn Street. It's plentiful and free on Sundays.

Route is here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2559541 where you can view a map of the route and see or print a cue sheet or GPS file.  (Updated 5/23/13.  This route is on a different site that allows the nonpaying public to print.  Maymyride.com forces the user to get a paying membership to print a cue sheet.)

There were four of us altogether. We all enjoyed the ride and learned some history along the way in Minuteman National Park. Too bad y'all bailed!

I just couldn't get motivated. I hope you guys do it again. Glad you had fun. Ric

I shouldn't have chickened out. Went to see Fast & Furious 6 and fell asleep, it was that awful....groan!

Great (educational) ride and we lucked out with the weather. Not a single rain drop! Thanks Alex for not pulling the plug due to the weather.

Sorry for not attending this event due to weather condition. I'll make it up next time around

Really hate to cancel this one, but I'm already slightly sick and don't want to add on to that by riding in bad weather. Sorry and thanks for organizing this! Any change you'll organize this ride again in the future when the weather is better??

    May 25, 2013

    • Alex G.

I very well may but I can't make any assurance that the weather will hold up a second time.

That'd be great! I don't mind biking in some rain, it's just the cold that's making me stay in this a.m. :-( I'd love to see a re-schedule of this. And to all braving the nasty weather out there: Safe and fun ride!

I didn't want my first ride of 2013 to be a potentially wet and cold one. Thanks for posting it though. Like others here, I hope you repeat this ride in the future.

It's too cold and rainy for me this morning (I'm from Florida!). I'll see everyone next ride. :)

We were planning to come, and looking forward to it, but it's pouring rain here now in Swampscott. We will get soaked just putting the rack and bikes on the car. We'll take a (not) rain check! Hope you organize it again for another (hopefully drier) day!

This sounds like a really nice ride, but with the rain I probably won't be able to appreciate it a lot. Hoping that you will do this one again.

Hi Alex. What time do you expect the ride to conclude?

    May 25, 2013

  • Ric W

Next time. I don't think today will be an enjoyable ride for me.

    Thank you Alex

Bad weather stinks. I tuned up my bike today, but I would prefer not to ride in rain and wind. I'd be interested in more Sunday rides though since I have a Saturday morning commitment.

  • Alex G.

I will keep you all posted about weather matters. I will lead the ride if there is any chance that a few people will still show up, even if most cancel.

    May 23, 2013

    • Alex G.

This is the final weather update. 0.03" of rain in the form of showers is expected for Sunday, mostly during daylight. During ride time, temperatures are expected to be 52-57 degrees with 20 mph winds. If I were a guest on this ride, I would probably cancel. But I'm leading it so I'll be there. Please update your RSVP if you are not attending so those on the waiting list can attend.

i hope i can avoid any big rainfall during the 20mi to get to the starting point.

Not so sure due to the rain but it looks like a fantastic ride. Enjoy!

I am out due to the forecast for rain that day. If you guys create a reschedule let me know.

are road bikes "not suggested" or you can only participate w/ fat knobby tires?

    May 20, 2013

    • Alex G.

Fat knobby tires are not necessary, but tires small than 28 mm are probably too small and iffy. I rode this same route on before, on a hybrid bike, on well-inflated 32-mm city tires. (Smooth tires with no knobs, just "grooves.") Road bikes lean too forward and are not good for balancing on the few rougher patches, or for going up and down small hills on the unpaved paths.

Will anyone be driving to Lexington from Boston? I live in Brookline and may bike there but would love to know if anyone is driving home.

    May 20, 2013

  • Surbhi M.

What would be the average speed of the ride ?

    May 19, 2013

    • Alex G.

Fairly slow because of the unpaved off-road portions and because the Minuteman Bikeway portion may be crowded. Also, there are enough people RSVP'ed that we should have at least 2 groups, maybe even 3, with different speeds. I wouldn't worry too much about it but the slowest group might average an estimated 10 mph (exluding stops) and the fastest might average 14 mph.

      1 · May 20, 2013

    • Alex G.

I will stay with the slowest group to take care of possible flats, repair or other issues with riders.

      1 · May 20, 2013

  • Alex G.

Does anybody know whether bikes are allow to ride up to the Old North Bridge? Or would we have to lock our bikes at the trail head?

    May 16, 2013

  • Jim L.

I think you need to make the route file public on MapMyRide...

    May 16, 2013

    • Alex G.

Thanks for alerting me to this. I have rarely used MapMyRide so I wasn't 100% sure how it worked. I marked the route as public. You may try again.
