Welcome to the January Manga Club, and the first meeting of 2014!

It’s a new year, with new Manga to be found! Titles we treasured in our youth will once more go out of print, or more hopefully, be rereleased in cheap omnibus editions!

Oh, and extra title baggage ignored from now on -_-;;;

As a time of new beginnings, this month’s theme will be geared towards the infamous concept of the reboot! You see, some series become so popular that the very characters become household names in dozens of countries. Some become famous, some infamous, but all a key element of manga, and usually anime history. Therefore, when the story eventually ends, the masses often cry out for more.

Enter the reboot!

The same characters, played out in their own universe, are reborn and adapted to new and exciting stories! Either the same villain is rewrapped in a shiny new quest, or the characters are moved completely outside their comfort zones. Either way, you don’t have to knockout a whole mess of character designs and new merchandise can be quickly produced!

Oh, and the fans can get their character fix -_-;;;

So without further ado, here are three titles have been rebooted for your viewing pleasure!

11/24/13

As promised, the voting closed tonight with a close race indeed. However, with a vote of eight to six, The Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse selection has won the day! Hope to see everybody there!

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse, Vol. 1 and 2 by Ming Ming!

Shinji Ikari's parents are gone, and he lives with his legal guardian, Ryoji Kaji, while attending the private NERV Academy. But no one ever told Shinji about its secrets... or that he'd find his fellow students Kaworu, Rei, and Asuka out on the streets late at night - fighting with sword, spear, and whip against an enemy that looks very human, but who Kaworu insists are beings called the Angels...

Now, for your patience, enjoy a trailer of another reboot that sadly won’t be available in time for our meeting. Ah well, better luck next year :)

The book (regular print, no pictures) that I mentioned was Austin Grossman's "Soon I Will be Invinsible"

  • CapyBaron

I found the discussion of the books interesting, even if I was not thrilled with "Campus Apocalypse" itself.

I'm going to stop at the crepe place before the meetup, don't know exactly when I'll get there though

    January 13, 2014

  • Joseph A.

Alright, as a reminder, I will be at Mr. Crepe with copies of all four volumes, it looks like starting at about 5:15 or earlier. If you haven't had a chance to read the volumes and/or get your own copies, or if you want to read the final two, come by early and check it out!

    January 13, 2014

  • Jerry

    Sorry. Can't make it.

    January 13, 2014

    • Joseph A.

      Shoot, sorry to hear it

      January 13, 2014

The mini Mondays/Magic Draft at Comicazi tonight will not interfere? http://comicazi.com/site/calendar/

    January 13, 2014

    • Joseph A.

We're going to be sharing the space in the back. It's worked alright for the last two meetings, but it is something we can discuss tonight.

      January 13, 2014

  • Nikki

Finally picked up my books at Comicazi today. I'll cram em in tonight!

My apologies. I ended up on five panels at Arisia and have been weighed down by convention prep. Please enjoy without me!

    January 12, 2014

    • Joseph A.

Shoot, I'm sorry you're not able to make it but I understand. See you at the con!

Alright people, I went by the venue a couple of days ago and it appears that they sold out of the extra volumes. Woohoo! However, if you did not preorder the volume or call ahead, you might be out of luck.

Anticipating this, I am going to suggest something. On Monday, I'm going to try to get to the square early and set up shop somewhere with a decent amount of seating. Then, I am going to provide my copies of the required reading in order to allow anyone who couldn't get their hands on the manga to have a chance to review it then. However, to make things more interesting, I also plan on bringing volumes 3 and 4, which completes the series. So if you want to find out what the heck happens, come by early.

Time and place will be announced when I have a better idea of the potential interest.

    • Ian

I'd definitely want to have a look at the last two volumes. HOw early were you thinking of doing this?

      January 10, 2014

    • Joseph A.

That will mostly depend upon work, but to be safe probably about 5:30PM. I think I'll set this up in the Crepe place. Also, anyone who would like to join for a bite would be more than welcome to do so! :D

      January 11, 2014

  • David S.

This will be my first meetup with you guys, so I'm a bit unfamiliar with how the process goes. If there's some voice acting I do a pretty good impression of a Japanese schoolgirl, I totally don't practice that in the shower...

To anyone who did not preorder the manga selection but still need copies for the club: Comicazi has a very limited selection of extra copies available for purchase! If you want to get both copies, please contact the store asap and ask them to be put aside for you. Remember to mention that you are a member of the manga book club! :D

To anyone who has preordered, I sent you a reminder e-mail. If you did not get one, make sure to call the store and confirm your copies are on hold. Their number is[masked]

    • Nikki

Got your message, will be picking up my copies soon, thanks for the reminder!

11/24/13 As promised, the voting closed tonight with a close race indeed. However, with a vote of eight to six, The Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse selection has won the day! Hope to see everybody there! Also, if you need a preorder but have not yet notified me, please contact me asap!

    November 24, 2013

    • Nikki

I'm not sure if I set a pre-order with you, since it's a title I wanted I'll want to go! Let me know what to do.

      November 25, 2013

    • Joseph A.

I can have a set of copies set aside for you if you so wish. No worries!

      November 26, 2013

  • Damien

Not sure if I'll be in the country then, but otherwise I'd vote for GitS.

    November 19, 2013

    • Joseph A.

I understand, but without an RSVP I can't count this as a vote, especially with how close the numbers are at the moment.

      November 21, 2013

  • Robert Van L.

Aw man, I'm going to be out of the country then, but hopefully GitS will win.

    1 · November 13, 2013

    • Joseph A.

Sadly, I can't count this for a vote, but I understand your reasoning.

      November 21, 2013

  • Joseph A.

I know it's a little early, but I was wondering if people had given any thought to preordering? Nothing is set in stone until the volume is picked, but if I could get a count of who would need what volumes, it would make my life a lot easier.

    For example,
"I would need Evangelion:C.A., but not Ghost in the Shell or Blood +"

    November 19, 2013

    • Ian

I'd want to preorder whichever we end up reading.

      November 20, 2013

  • Joseph A.

Due to a policy change, voting for the Januay Manga Selection will be cut off on Sunday, November 24th. Please review the following message for further details.

    November 17, 2013

  • Tim

I'd like to vote for the Ghost in the Shell manga.

    November 5, 2013

  • Ian

I'm going to throw my weight behind Evangelion.

    November 5, 2013

  • Lisa

I vote for Neon Genesis Evangeleon Campus Apocalypse. :)

    November 4, 2013

  • Joseph A.

Alright, as of right now, the board votes are as follows! Blood +: 0 votes!
    Evangelion C.A.: 1
    GitSSAC: 2

However! Tonight we had the additional voting block for the December Manga Club, which brings the current rankings up to:

    Blood+ : 3
    Evangelion C.A.: 6
    GitSSAC: 5

So Evangelion Campus Apocalypse is in the lead! Remember, Voting for January is open until the evening of December 2nd!

    November 4, 2013

  • Elysia

I vote for Ghost in the Shell

    November 4, 2013

  • Jerry

Ghost in the Shell gets my vote!

    October 30, 2013

  • Nikki

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Campus Apocalypse sounds good! Read the original Evangelion manga but never this one.
