Congratulations to all participants, whatever firm your participation took. None of it could have happened without everyone involved.

I bought a Flea which has a lovely sound but the fret board is solid brown plastic; nothing stood out marking the frets. It was harder to see and learn. Also, the plastic Flea is not so economical, ca $175... ..

    July 7, 2013

    • Jim P.

The Flukes/Fleas aren't cheap, but they're worth the price. My concert Fluke sounds as good as any comparably priced wood uke I've heard, it makes a big sound (that plastic bowl is very resonant), and I've been able to toss it in the trunk and take it anywhere I go for the last 7 years with no worries.

      1 · July 10, 2013

    • Jeff B.

I'm sure I'm going to break down and go out to Sheffield, MA and see if I can get me Concert or Tenor sized second.

      July 10, 2013

  • Jeff B.

Regarding the Uke Leash, I noticed that for ukulele groups (that would mean us, I think), Lori Apthorp at Uke Leash offers 20% off for orders of 4 or more. It may be easier for each of us to order on our own, but I imagine it would save some shipping costs as well as the 20% if we ordered as a group. I'd be happy to spearhead it as long as anyone ordering would promise to make sure they paid me and would be at a Boston (or North Shore) meetup.

Jeff: I need to get a uke arm strap like you had @ Brandeis; where would I find that? Thanks, o wise-one -:)

    1 · July 8, 2013

    • Jeff B.

The Uke Leash is a two-part set. The loop that goes around the headstock and the part that goes around your shoulder and connects to the loop part. You only need one of the latter, and as many of the former as you have ukuleles. You leave the loop part that attaches to the headstock on the ukuleles. Then you just attach/detach the strap to whichever ukulele you're playing. Clever.

Also try musicarts.com/Search/Default.aspx?internal=1&browser=&fsrc=ukulele+strap&src=ukulele+strap. I got the Levy's 3/8 Cotton Webbing Ukulele Strap.

My custom ordered concert Flea wasn't set up so beautifully-- the tuning pegs are very tight. Jeff, you sound like you know what you are talking about...

    July 7, 2013

  • Geoffrey R.

One of the great things about the Flea Market Music instruments, besides the fact they travel well in any weather condition, is that they are set up perfectly when you get them.

    1 · July 7, 2013

    • Jeff B.

Yes. I'd like to visit their shop in Sheffield. But they start at $179.

      July 7, 2013

  • Nancy A. M.

You might buy a used uke from someone in our group; uke enthusiasts tend to have many, many ukes; you can really only play one at a time...

    July 6, 2013

  • Nancy A. M.

I've bought two at The Music Emporium, E. Lexington but I heard that the Guitar Center, Boston, has good deals. Make sure you get one with distinct fret marks if you are a beginner or novice.

    PART 2
I thought about DropBox, but the size limitation is small. Google Drive was an option, but I am not sure how we can set it up for a number of people to lob their stuff in. I thought of maybe buying an eternal hard drive and having people bring the stuff to the next strum-fest. It would be nice if all this stuff was together…archiving it. The end game: looking at all the footage and (1) uploading chunks onto YouTube and (2) editing a nice 5 minute program about the Melee. Anyone whose brain contains a secret lobe for technical stuff (which my cranium cries "poverty"), let me know.

PART 1 Savvy as I am in many things worldly, I do not live in a universe where I am as technologically literate as many, and by many, I also include some orangutans. I know that buried under the cloak of our ukulele lives, many of us have real jobs, secret talents, and competencies. I hope that includes computer hardware acumen. Herein my problem. A handful of people (me included) shot video or stills of the Melee and I want to see if we can huddle them into one big file, perhaps allowing each person to upload clips, footage, pictures, etc, so we have everything under one roof. (See Part 2) .

    June 17, 2013

  • Chuck G.

I am trying to figure out the best way to amass all the video and stills into one coherent heap. I am investigating either Drop Box or Google Drive (I am used to ME putting stuff on one of thee sites for others to download, but need to figure out how to allow people to upload files onto one I can access. I am sure it is easy, I have not yet unraveled the mystery, and it is yet another enigma of the cosmos that has heretofore eluded me). I ask everyone to put his/her stuff (from camera, vid cameras, smart phones, etc) into a file. Email me with the size of the file and we will go from there, whether I have room on my existing local hard drives or if I need to go out a dedicated drive for our collection. What I am seeing looks really nice. I was also wondering if anyone recorded the audio feed directly from the PA system (If we did not, we should do that ext year).

I enjoyed the workshops and group strums. Great venue. Sorry, I'm pretty shy so only met one person. Wil introduced himself. Another guy said he liked the sound of my playing. That was about it. I pretty much stood around feeling a bit uneasy. My fault.

    2 · June 16, 2013

    • Jeff B.

Art, you get a variety of people at these events, but I know that you're not alone with regard to being shy. Even at the regular meetups, some are more outgoing, some others less-so. I think it comes with the territory of playing something a bit "oddball" like the ukulele. My wife is fairly shy when it comes to meeting new people, too, so I hear it from her.

To anyone who took video or photos and/or still.... i might be nice somewhere down the road to assemble a little visual/musical melange... to use for a promo for next year...or just for our own amusement. So three things...
    (1) get in touch w/ me if you would like to upload your files into the melee archives (We can use Drop Box or Google Drive)
    (2) anyone with an interest or penchant for video who wants to work on the edit of a 5 minute piece (or even spearhead this effort), get in touch. I produced film/video for years, but would prefer seeing the project come from members.... I will happily provide guidance and all manner o' help.
    (3) We also have all the group and individual performances recorded, so if someone could take on the mini project of uploading them, we can put these on YouTube. Anyone with iMovie, Final Cut, Premiere, or the like...plus a couple of hours can get these up and viewable.

    June 16, 2013

Can't seem to find much info online for the Slosberg Music Center. What sort of venue is it? Do we need to bring folding chairs (I can't imagine myself standing for 6 hours). Also, regarding parking, Deb mentioned the theatre parking lot? Where is it and how far is it from the muisc center? Is there a map of the immediate area other than the following which was not helpful in answering my questions: http://www.brandeis.edu/about/visiting/map.html?bldgid=0035

    June 14, 2013

    • Janet

According to the map, it's the first building on the left, not on the right. And to park in the Theater Dept, you would not take that first left to the Slosberg building, but the second left.

      June 15, 2013

    • Deb Todd W.

Sorry- its the first bldg on the LEFT! Enter Brandeis, go left, then it's on the left!

For those interested in capturing the day on still/video, here are some answers to questions I've received.

Video settings won't matter. We'll have many different formats. Shoot in either 16:9 or 4:3. HD: nice but not necessary.

Tripod mounting always a bit nicer than handheld. If handheld, try to be steady. Avoid lots of movements-too many zooms. If you have an external mic, use it to get closer to the source of the music.

Content: Performances. Workshops. Performer. Reaction shoots. Participants. Interviews/voice bites could be fun.

Stills: anything and everything. Long shots. Close ups. People. Ukes. It would be nice if we got a smattering of every event.... both visuals and some sound. Let's capture as much as we can...we can use this to promote the event next year.. and perhaps get some sponsors.

But remember.... this day is not about producing video, it is about uke-fun, so enjoy, but try to capture whatever you can amid your own ukulelean-frolic. Chuck

Okay, but who is going to preside over the table? Who is handling the transaction? Is it on the honor system (at both tables?) Just asking.

When I used Google Maps to look up the directions, it looked like there are only about a dozen parking spaces at the Slosberg Music Center. And over 50 of us going. Can we park at a different building? It looks like if we take the next left, after Slosberg, there is a much bigger parking lot at the Dept. of Theater Arts. If it's okay to park there, it seems like a better choice. Plus we can leave those dozen spaces for those who are organizing and bringing in a lot of stuff and for anyone who is handicapped.

A nice audio recording, especially of the performance segment, may I may a nice idea...... I may be able to bring a microphone which can capture better sound. Anyone else with a mic and perhaps a computer with audio capture can bring one along as well. We can cover a few of the workshops as well. While this may be a last-minute idea, recording a representative slice of this event and assembling a well-produced video might have some benefits, maybe even to trigger some sponsorship for next year. Anyone seriously interested in this idea, please let me know here...and/or meet me at 11:45... bring any "capture gear" you have. If a few people spend a small chunk of time recording a small piece of the action, then it won't be a time burden on anyone (and we can spend the rest of our time just enjoyin' the event.) The event will be a hoot..... I look forward to it! The organizers have my admiration. Chuck
