3rd Thursday: New Location!

  • Dec 20, 2012 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

In our winding search for a place to call home, member Camille has set us up to try Urbano, a gallery/studio space with cool acoustics in the Brewery building in JP (where the Milky Way is).

This will be our regular "third Thursday" get together--so bring your self, your uke, and your good attitude, and let's try out the new space and have a little almost-Christmas cheer together.

Urbano is located on the second floor of the Brewery Building on 29 Germania Street in Jamaica Plain.

Enter at the main entrance left of the Milky Way restaurant and bar, take the elevator to the second floor and follow signs to Urbano.

There is a parking lot, but the studio is readily accessible via public transportation by taking the orange line to the Stonybrook stop-- it is a three block walk from the T.

For more info check Urbanoproject.org contact us page.

Thank you everyone for playing Imagine and we even did it twice. Thank you Ted for suggesting at the second time. It meant a lot to me and I hope our voice reached to the people in Newtown, Conn. I'm feeling much better now.

Here are some more last minute directions. If you come by T on the stonybrook stop, the easiest way to get here is to enter via the main entrance of the brewery building at 284 Amory Street and take the elevator up to floor one and follow signs to Urbano. If you are driving, it its best to park at 29 Germania St directly across from the Samuel Adams tours. Call me if you have any trouble finding the place. I will post some signs as well. Important Question!!!!!
What is Urbanproject's stance on us having booze in their space?
I will bring the rum and egg nog again this year, if allowed.

      Booze it is!

Just received word that food and drink are welcome, but bring your own (or enough to share).

Stacy is charge of the playlist for this one. I'll make sure to point her here to your suggestions.

I'm going to keep to a Winter/Christmas theme for this meetup, but as a big ol' Elvis Costello fan, I think that What's So Funny About Peace, Love & Understanding would be a great tune for the meetup after this!

    Can I do Billy Squier?

Are you and I the only two people in the world who know it? (Well, except Billy Squire presumably...)

    yep,
    I'll bring an extra.

    See you there.

I'm bringing a friend tonight who is new to the uke. Does anyone have an extra uke they'd be willing to let her use tonight?

It just occurred to me to mention something some of you might be interested in; since some of you know my son Maurice: if you get over to JP early on Thursday, his band is playing at 6p.m. at City Feed in JP Center. You can also get a sandwich there, and it's just a few blocks from the Brewery building.

And if you don't know the unofficial Official Ukulele Union Christmas song you should watch this video http://youtu.be/P37xPiRz1sg

So, I'm still prepping the tunes for Thursday, but here's one that I'm going to teach you, http://youtu.be/GpO11ZhWDY0

Where is the parking lot? How is the street parking?

    December 13, 2012

    • Jim B.

The parking lot is next to the building. It's a large outdoor parking lot and if you find the building, it's impossible to miss. There's no charge. You could park on the street pretty easily but there should be no need to.

Hey people.. I just started playing the uke a month ago and I've read several places that the forums at ukuleleunderground are an immense resource for any uke player. However I wanted to ask around before I made the leap of paying the 120$/year fee.
I apologize in advance as I realize this may not be the most appropriate place to ask this question, but I figured you guys might be the best audience to this query.
    Thanks! :)

I didn't know they charged for the forums. Charlie's point is good, and you might find you get a lot of that info first hand by coming to a few meetups and asking questions and soaking up music!

      December 11, 2012

    • Jeremie B.

Hi Keith, the forums are mostly separate from the pay site (which is a lot of tutorials, lessons, etc - disclosure, I did a month or two and found it helpful, but did not pay for a full year). You should be able to access the forums w/o paying.

Do we want to follow up "Friday I'm in Love" with "Everyday I Write the Book"?

There are other Elvis Costello tunes that I like better... But that one is fine.

(Not my favorite Elvis song either, but thematically in keeping with not my favorite Cure song from last time.)

Crocodile Rock is a good one too.

I was thinking of doing this lovely Christmas song for the meetup last night, but maybe we can all learn it and sing it at this next one, since it's all tabbed out for uke on the Ukulele Hunt website (note: the video, due to the randy lyrics, is NOT safe for work!) http://ukulelehunt.com/2012/12/04/eric-idle-fuck-christmas-chords/

    December 7, 2012

    • Jim B.

That's what I thought...and I think the fingering for the Em11 could be voiced a little differently...but I think the transcriber was too bothered by the tinkling piano part to figure it out properly.

      December 8, 2012

    • Rich

The Am,Am7,Am6, F part seems a bit off as well. I will work it out and tab it up.

  • Benai

Here's a PG Xmas song I think would be fun b/c you get to make animal noises! ;) I don't have the chords, but maybe someone could figure them out. It's by a local band and some guys in my running club were playing it last week, so I might be to bet guitar chords from them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeaTe7O1iCw
