THE ROOTS OF LIBERTY:A Theatrical Celebration of The Empancipation Proclamation

Come see Danny Glover perform!  Hear the historical commentary of Edwidge Danticat and Henry Louis Gates Jr.! “Roots of Liberty’’ tells the story of Cecile, a Haitian-American high school student who is assigned to write a paper on someone who helped pave the way to the Emancipation Proclamation. When she chooses Toussaint Louverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution and an inspiration for the antislavery movement in the United States, Cecile’s teacher informs her she cannot write about him because he is “not in the textbook.’’

She sets out to prove Louverture’s significance and impact on US history. In what is described as “a kind of waking dream,’’ Cecile journeys through the history and culture of both nations, encountering along the way Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Union soldiers, and eventually Louverture himself.

Glover will play either Louverture or Douglass in the pageant, Underground Railway said, while Gates and Danticat will provide commentary and historical insight.

Admission is FREE!  Reservations are not required, but accepted.

The play was quite entertaining; I appreciated all of the effort that went into creating it. A true "konbit," as Edwidge Danticat rightly acknowledged! Bel bagay! And how beautiful was that church?! Wow!

Not sure exactly what to expect as far as the chance that we can all sit together. I made reservations, but I don't know if we get seats or if it is "first-come, first-served". I plan on arriving around 4:30 and scoping things out. Hope to see you then!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
