Got bit by the android in February. I was looking for something new to learn after I quit. I decided to learn Android and Java so I bought a smart phone and started playing. I never got the emulator working after many, many frustrating hours. It dawned on me later that I have a google TV box that runs android too. I wrote an activity tracking app for my phone that uses GPS and google maps. I also bought a Raspberry Pi back in February and learned Python and Debian. I have a TCP socket server on the Pi that passes data from the head end of a proprietary wireless network at my house for temperature monitoring. I wrote an android client that can access the data and display the current temperatures on my phone from anywhere with an IP connection. The same app runs on my google TV.
I am a EE and have been writing code professionally for 30 years. I'm currently taking a sabbatical. Since quitting, I have learned Java and Android. It's been fun.
