Twilight Imperium Learning Day

  • Feb 23, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

It's time to play the greatest game in the verse - Twilight Imperium!  Don't let the name fool you - this game has nothing to do with teenage vampires who sparkle in the sunlight.  It's an epic board game of galactic conquest, politics, and trade!  I've had a few people express an interest in learning this game, so that's what the purpose of this meetup will be.  TI veterans are welcome, but I want everyone who wants to learn this game to have the opportunity to learn it today.

NOTE: THIS MEETUP IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PLAY TWILIGHT IMPERIUM!  I may create another meetup in the same place at the same time after we get some folks signed up for this one, so that people can come and play other games (in the same way that Ryan sets up Eclipse games from time to time, then Forrest sets up a meetup for everyone else to play games while the others play Eclipse).

Twilight Imperium is my favorite game of all time, but it usually takes all day to play and requires patience and endurance.  The time typically flies by, partly because the game is designed so that you don't necessarily have much downtime between turns, partly because there is a great deal of strategy involved, and partly just because it's a really fun game.

Kelly Phipps offered to bring his copy and teach a game as well, so we can fit more folks into the meetup.  Ideally I'd like to stick to four people per game, so we can get finished sooner, but we could go up to six if needs be.  In my opinion, the game is best played with either four or six people.

If you've had a bad experience learning this game before, I encourage you to give it another chance, as having a good teacher can make a big difference (and Kelly and I are great teachers!).  This is Fantasy Flight's flagship game, and as such, is very complex.  If you want to play, I encourage you to check out the rules first.  I'll explain everything, but there is a lot to digest, and the more familiar you are with the game before we start playing, the faster and smoother the game will go.  The rules for the base game and both expansions can be found here.

Because it's such a long game, it's a good idea to bring enough food to last you through the day.  If you want to share, great, but don't feel like you have to.  I'll have some snacks here for everyone too.  And BYOB.

Oh, and after you play the game, you will find the lolcat pic above to be hilariously funny.  Hilariously.

Haha tell Ryan that! Glad you had fun, Delmar. I hope you come back for more!

What an awesome day! Thanks for coming, everyone. I hope you enjoyed the game. Keep in mind that next time, it will go WAY faster since people know how to play now. Expect about an hour per player if we make sure to keep things moving as we go.

    I didn't actually play...I hadn't read the rules beforehand...but I had a really good time.

Hey Victor, what optional rule will we play with (If you're even still awake...)
I won't get off work until after 2am so I'd like to read them in case I don't get on the road as quickly in the morning as I plan (waking up at 9 or 10am is just, crazy...) just so I have less rules to absorb all at once.

We'll be playing with pretty much all optional rules. The only one I can think of that is comples enough to warrant reading about is the distant suns option (in the rule book for the base game). Although really, it'd recommend focusing on the basics (the stuff I mentioned in the other comment).

    A few things to note:

First off, if anyone coming from Boulder can give Kelly a lift, that would be awesome. Since he's bringing a copy of the game, it would be good if you can get him here a little early so we can start setting it up. He lives on Glenwood between 28th and 30th St.

Sean, I could not find a third teacher, so I don't think we'll need your copy of the game. Still, if you do end up finishing getting it punched/organized, feel free to bring it just in case!

Everyone, please do your best to be here on time. If you think you can't make it, please don't wait until the last minute to cancel, so that the waitlisters can get in. I do not have a coffee machine, but I do have a tea kettle and some good tea.

And finally, waitlisters, please come too! It's possible (I might even say probable) that someone will cancel, and even if that doesn't happen, a few other folks will be playing other board games here that day, so there will be something fun to do here.

Sure, I'll give Kelly a ride.

      Thanks, Michael!

Diagnosed with a severe case of GADHD after that Civilization game, so I can't commit to something that potentially goes to 6+ hours. I'll play in the alternate, shorter board game universe, though...

There is a ninety percent chance we will be seeing the in-laws on the west slope this weekend. So we're going to pass. If things change we may hit up the overflow none TI games.

  • Delmar T.

Do we need to read the expansion rules too?

    February 14, 2013

    • Victor R.

We'll be playing with both expansions. The strategy cards we'll be using are 1 Leadership
      2 Diplomacy I/II
      3 Assembly II
      4 Production
      5 Trade III
      6 Warfare I/II
      7 Technology II
      8 Bureaucracy

So you don't need to read about the other cards.

There are a lot of instructions. Don't feel like you have to read them all. The most important parts are the descriptions of command counters, resources/influence, what it means to activate a system, how to score objectives, and battle - all of which can be found in the instructions for the base game.

The only other thing that might be particularly good to look at is a description of the strategy cards we'll be using (located towards the end of the various instruction books).

The random links to ads that meetup.com inserts into these descriptions are pretty annoying.

I have always had antivirus software running. Maybe something slipped through. *sigh*

Virus protection programs only work 50% of the time, Users tend to circomvent the programs designed to help them most the time without even realizing it. I've dealt with 2 viruses here at work that were so bad they infected our servers and caused the whole company shut down for a day. In the last 3 months

im confirmed on a Saturday, eh?

    February 14, 2013

  • Zachery

Awesome! I played the first few rounds of a game maybe 3 or 4 years ago, but would love to re-learn all the rules and play again!

By the way, if we get more than 12 interested, and if someone else feels like bringing a copy and teaching, I can open it up to one more game.
