Making fat stacks (of rectangles)

Meetup number two! Thursday, November 21st, at Gnip's Boulder office, at 6:30.

This time we'll be going over D3 layouts, building on the selection and data-binding tricks we learned about last time. Brian Lehman from Gnip's Data Science team and I will dive into a case study in using D3's stacked layout, cover different data organization approaches, define custom accessors, add legends, discuss development workflow, and more.

Like last time, part of this session will be hands-on, so for those interested in playing with the examples and extending things, bring a laptop or group up!

We have a Github Organization for the code and slides that we'll be using, check it out here: Slides from the first meetup are in the vis-1 repo, and available live here:

I've had a few requests to use the membership list to announce relevant job openings. I want to connect local companies with talented people, but don't want to spam anyone. As a compromise, I'll be maintaining a page with data-vis focused job openings and will let everyone know when that's up and running. It'll be run off of the github org.

See you next week! As always, if you have topics you'd like to present (perhaps short lightning-talk sessions?), or feedback on anything, let me know. We have some exciting stuff coming up soon, but the more the merrier!

For those who weren't there yesterday and missed the announcement, Women Who Code is hosting an Intro to Data Vis workshop at SendGrid on December 3rd. The group and it's meetups are for those who identify as women only, but there will be another workshop open to all if there's enough interest.

Will there be a screencast/hangout for people that would like to attend remotely?

Apologies if this info is readily available and I am missing it.

Unfortunately I haven't put together a setup for live streaming. I could do something very basic with a webcam, but that seems likely to be an unsatisfactory experience. There have been a few requests for a stream, so I'll try to have something workable for next time. Slides will be available in a little while.

I have a conflict this time, hoping to make it next time! Looking forward to seeing job openings in this area.

I'm so disappointed that I can't attend! Happy for those slides, though.

Sorry you can't be there! All the slides and examples we'll be using will be on the GitHub org, so check them out when you can. :)
