No more rides: how to reboot this meetup

  • Needs a date

  • Needs a location

  • It seems to me that this meetup has become a completely dysfunctional one. With about 750 members this is a very large group. However, aside of BMA rides, there are basically no actual meetup activities. The BMA ones are fun but BMA has their own site. If this all we do we may as well close this meet up. Am I crazy or should this meetup group not be more than a BMA conduit? I like to solicit some input (and I know we could have used the discussions section but that is another sad chapter...). Does anybody have some ideas on why this meetup is not working? Part of the problem may be that most, if not all, of the original organizers have bailed. Are you aware that everybody can post rides? Are the proposals too vague, the rides suggested too hard/easy, the lead time too short? I am not one of the original organizers but I did organize some well attended advanced rides. More recently even these have not gathered much interest. I tend to post these rides kinda last minute. I could see that this could be a problem. How much lead time do you guys like? Anyway, please comment. Perhaps we can find a way to reboot this meet up. As things are we are just wasting everybody's time and the sponsor's money. Also, if you think this meetup is working actually quite well feel free to share that too. Maybe my perception is completely distorted.

In the spirit of this post actually being about riding: I am planing to ride Picture Rock at 12. If you have time meet at the parking.

...Also, I think there might be a bit of a chick-or-the-egg scenario going on here. I don't know about everyone else but I'm not very inclined to sign up for a ride without a time or location. And it sounds like people posting rides aren't very inclined to pick a time and location unless there is enough interest.

I've been on a few rides with this group in the past. I figured it was just hibernating for the winter, like all of the mountain biking groups. If the weather stays as nice as it has been lately, I would be up for an after-work or weekend ride. Although I will say that I don't seem to have gotten emails about any of the upcoming rides. Maybe because they are all TBD? I don't know.

Apparently, the settings for this site have changed as it's no longer possible to post a ride until you have at least 3 RSVP's. As such, it will be nearly impossible to post rides to this meetup group now. If you'd like to keep up with the BMA Social Rides then you should "like" BMA on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/BoulderMountainbikeAlliance
You can also keep up with BMA Events on their website here: http://bouldermountainbike.org/

I just got back in town after being gone for 2 months. but in the spring scheduled a ride or two and had pretty goodturn out.
sounds like there hasn't been too many rides this summer, but I can see putting together a ride myself for the crew every few weeks. I especially like how to group allow anybody to post a ride can oftentimes someone last minute but it still seems to work often.

Sounds good but now the question is will somebody be willing to pay money for meetup support. Without that the plug will be pulled in 14 days.

Thanks for the reminder Alex. While anyone should be able to schedule a ride, if this group is to continue it needs new leadership and I should have passed the reigns on this Spring. I moved from Boulder to Summit County and am no longer scheduling weekly rides like i have in years past. I hope a new team of leaders will step up and schedule rides, as I've met some really cool people and have been on some great rides since I started this group over four years ago and I hope others can have the same experience. I have been paying the meetup fees ($70/year) out of pocket, so whomever steps up to lead the group will need to figure out how they want to manage the meetup fees. It's been a lot of fun, and thanks to the people who have scheduled rides and joined me on some fun rides as well. Have fun, good luck, and keep riding. Happy trails!

Dave, very nice of you to sponsor the meet up. Thank you. I did not know this. Happy riding to you.

Dave, looks like the meet up wants to pull the plug on this meet up in 15 days. Is 360 - 15 days when you paid last? I am wondering where the 15 days are coming from.

I just joined a few weeks ago so I'm just getting a feel here. I know that I ride in Boulder county every week, and often during the week. Perhaps if we all agree to schedule a meetup at least once...

It's a great group of people. I have to admit I only joined in on one meetup ride. For those of us who are beginner mtn bikers, I found the group to be incredibly helpful and supportive, but just too fast for me to keep up. I felt bad that they were always waiting for me so never rode with the group again. Most rides that I've seen posted since are for intermediate to advanced riders....which isn't me unfortunately. Not sure that helps with whether or not to maintain the group but it's the reason I've not stayed active.

I noticed early in the summer there were many posted rides and now there are none and I was puzzled by that and didn't know why. My main interest in this meet up is for rides.

I have to plead guilty to not posting my own rides when I could have but can't clearly explain why. It's partly a feeling of wanting for someone else to take the lead and I'll follow along. This is especially if I post a ride and then no one seems interested.

Regarding scheduling, I have a pretty different schedule than most people so it can be pretty hard for me to make certain rides. Usually have to have my wife home or have a babysitter. If the ride fits with my schedule, I usually don't need much lead time and if it doesn't, lead time doesn't make a huge difference.

I'll put out there that some of my best riding times are weekdays during the morning after 8am. I can often due weekends but that is hit or miss depending on activities with the kids.
