Niwot Ridge high alpine ride (Boulder County's highest trail)

It is time again for this high altitude adventure. Check out the picts from last time to get a sense of scenery and adventure. The question is when. The weather has to be pretty close to perfect for this one. Sept 2 (Sunday) may work.

This is an amazing ride with breathtaking views of the Indian Peeks wilderness and the Continental Divide. Starts at over 9,000 feet, at the Sourdough South trail head, follows up parts of Sourdough A, connects over to the Niwot Ridge trail and then climbs up along several CU research posts all the way to a mind boggling 12,500 feet (way above tree line). Goes without saying: this is not a beginner ride. There is little air up there. If you have only been riding/hiking at Boulder altitude this could be an issue. The seasonal window of opportunity is now. The snow free season is very short up there. We have to wait for a "perfect" day with no or little chance of afternoon storms. The ideal time would be to start at about 9am. Post a comment if you are considering and have time constraints/suggestions. Some info about the place including location: http://culter.colorado.edu/NWT/

Place: Sourdough Trail Head, Peek to Peek (highway 72), ~4 miles south of where Left Hand canyon meets Peek to Peek. There is a sign "University of Colorado Research Station" on your right when you drive south.

I'm out now. Can't do today. Tomorrow I'm now doing Redstone's Cyclery's Big Fall Ride so can't spend the time from family today. If the weather's good next Sunday I'll do this ride then and I invite anyone who can't do today to come with me.

looks like I could bail out of my other commitment and we could get started on the trail head at 11am. Would that be better?

This weekend looks good with Sunday being the best. How about Sunday 23rd?

Sept 9 would rule me out as I participate in the Caribou (formerly Suffer Fest).

This Saturday looks okay weather wise and the wind will be from the SW so will actually push you UP the mountain. Sunday will be WINDY in the morning and 20% thunderstorms after noon so will not be good.

The 29th also currently looks doable, but the forecast for the 28th is for snow in the morning up there so it's beginning to get a little iffy.

How about the Sunday the 9th? Forecast calls for 62F and sunny on Apache Peak. The weekend after that does not look good. The weekend after that may be promising based on Accuweather but I don't really trust Accuweather in this area.

There is parking space along Lee Hill road. This could be a good place to consolidate bikes.
