Rita, did you get my note on your page about my change of phone number? What time do you think you'll be coming by?

    March 22, 2013

    • Rita

Elisa, I didn't get your note. I left the house before you posted this! I left you two text messages and a voice message. I drove by your place, but didn't know your unit number, so I couldn't ring. Darn! You were missed!

Yeah, my phone completely died, like I can't use that phone number anymore, even. Had to completely switch over. I've lost all my contacts. You're the first one in my new phone's memory!

I just called Restaurant 4580 to verify Rita's reservation, since I've seen these things fall apart sometimes. They have reserved the back dining room for us starting at 5:00 pm. I bumped the number from 9 to 12 in case people, such as myself, skipped the hike but still want to come for Happy Hour!! So come join us. They can squeeze in a couple more too.

Looks like snow came early. Hope you guys were prepared. If you're still going to 4580 around 5:15, I would like to join if possible around 5:30-5:45 after my conference call. I live very close. Let me know if this is possible.
    Thanks
    Scott

I don't think it came in early. The weather report said mid-afternoon, so I'd say it's a little late, actually. Anyway, there's no reason why we can't join the Happy Hour. I'm going. Planning to arrive at 5:15 too.

I'm gonna show up and try to hike, regardless of weather (unless it gets dramatic). I'm bringing a change of shoes in case it rains.

    Looking forward to it!

    MEETUP SPOT:
We'll meet by the trail sign at the intersection of Dakota Blvd. and 2nd Street (Dakota Ridge Northbriar). Directions: Take Broadway north to Laramie. Turn left on Laramie. Turn left on Chinle. Turn Right on Dakota Blvd. Take it to the end. You'll see a few parking spots, and there's also plenty of street parking in the area. If you prefer, the designated Trail Head parking lot is on Lee Hill Drive. If you park there, allow an extra 10 or 15 minutes.

Do you know how long the hike will be? I would like to go but have a conference call at 5pm.
    Thanks

    March 22, 2013

    • Rita

It will take the group 1 1/2 to 2 hours. You can start with us, and either go on ahead at a faster pace, or turn back if need be.

So I would really love to go but would sorta need a ride since I'm afraid of driving back in the dark with tail- lights- I'm from Aurora

For all you newbies to our great state, spring is a VERY changeable time here. You know the saying "If you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes and it'll change."? Well, that's supremely true in Colorado, but don't despair, we still have a lot of gorgeous days that stay steady. Just remember, being flexible is a good thing. Yoga anyone? ;-)

The weather report is calling for a temp. drop and rain/snow mix starting mid-day today. Might want to rethink the hike, or at least what you're gonna wear. If the hike gets post-poned, do people still want to meet for Happy Hour at 4580? I would come. I'm gonna need a brain-break by 5.

Is the map accurate? Dakota and 2nd meetup point? Thanks.

    March 21, 2013

    • Rita

Yeah. Initially, the group was small, and just a few cars. There's parking in the neighborhood by the meetup spot. If you prefer, you can park on Lee Hill Drive at the official parking spot and walk over. It will take you about ten minutes.

      March 21, 2013

  • cindy

what is the terrian like? is there ice and snow on the trail?

    March 21, 2013

    • Rita

The terrain is open, and will be dry unless we get some rain tomorrow.

      March 21, 2013

  • Virginia G.

Looking forward to meeting new people!

    March 21, 2013

  • Rita

I'm parking in the neighborhood by Dakota and 2nd so I can save time after the hike and get to the restaurant sooner. The official parking lot for the hike is on Lehigh. It takes about ten minutes to walk to the meetup spot from there. If you park on Lehigh, please allow enough time to walk to the meetup spot by 3:00.

Given the forecast for tomorrow, think I will not make it to the hogback tomorrow. I signed up for the prairie hike next week.

    March 21, 2013

  • Rita

I decided on Restaurant 4580. The guy I talked to there was very accommodating, and said they don't mind separate checks. I booked a table. Happy hour ends at 6:00, but I think we'll easily get there by about 5:00 or so. The address is 4580 Broadway, by the corner of Broadway and Yarmouth.

I may not be able to get away early enough for the hike, but I'll try and make the happy hour about 5 - what's the reservation under, Rita?

    March 20, 2013

    • Rita

I booked a table under my name at Restaurant 4580. Hope you can make the hike, Gordon. Otherwise, see you after.

I'm slated to be in Lafayette at 7 that evening for a game night, so Conor O'Neill's would not be convenient for me, since I live near Jay and the Diagonal and will have to go home to feed my animal companions before I head east. Anyone up for eating at one of the restaurants I listed below that are in N. Boulder so we don't have to fight for Friday afternoon parking and crowds?

We can decide this the day of, if the group is this small. If more join in, we can reassess. I vote for 4580 Restaurant.

Any chance we can do 3:30? off work at
    3. Would really like to join in. Love Hogback Conors combo idea!

    March 17, 2013

The group could start a little after 3pm and you could join it at the "A" about a half mile north of that "P" parking area at 3:30pm.

Interestingly, I've never hiked this trail, despite living fairly close by. What's the difficulty of it? Would we start on the east side of Hwy 36, go thru the tunnel and then head west?
Or start from the neighborhood or other parking lot on the west side of 36?
I found this map of the area, if anyone's interested in viewing it.
    http://bouldercolorado.gov/files/openspace/maps/trailheads/WonderlandFourMileFoothills.pdf

With all the great places to eat and drink up in the north section of Boulder, why head to downtown Boulder to Conor's and pay for parking?
Is it for the music, because I don't think the food is all that great there.

Restaurant 4580 does a really good Happy Hour:
    http://www.restaurant4580.com/Menu-HappyHour.aspx

And so does DaGabi Cucina. It's on the east side of Lucky's Market.

    Pupusas has one too: http://www.pupusasboulder.com/

    March 17, 2013

    • Rita

The Hogback loop is about 3 miles, with about 880 feet elevation gain. Protrails gives it a moderate difficulty rating. I like it because it's convenient, and there's no way I can get lost!

      March 18, 2013

  • March 18, 2013

I love it when you'all use words that pretty much have no meaning to me: Chatauqua, Bluebell, DaGabi Cucina, Hogback Conors combo (is this a dinner special at the place where we're eating afterwards?)

Hogback-Conor combo means hiking the Hogback trail, then heading into downtown Boulder for Happy Hour, or longer, at Conor O'Neill's Irish Pub & Restaurant[masked]th St.

      March 18, 2013

  • Bob F.

Another alternative is Chatauqua: Hike Bluebell Road south past the Bluebell Shelter to the sign where Royal Arch trail exits left. Turn north and hike past the sign for Flatirons 1&2 then follow Bluebell/Baird north to Baseline trail then Baseline trail back to parking area. This should avoid the mud on Chatauqua Trail. This is about 2.1 miles. Map at http://bouldercolorado.gov/files/openspace/maps/trailheads/ChautauquaMeadow.pdf

Woop! I'm so there. Rita, I've never been to Hogback, but if you like it, sounds great to me. And I always love Conor's. Nice and casual and can fit just about any number of people.
