Walking Through the Language of the Landscape

Shapely mountains, textured meadows, communities of plants - these are the voices of the landscape, patiently waiting for an observer to discern their stories. Join naturalist Lynne Sullivan as we learn to read the language of the landscape for the subtle and significant stories of our beloved wildlands. Meet at the Chautauqua Ranger Cottage with water and snacks for this 3 mile moderate hike. Appropriate for teens and up.

Sorry to back out of my first hike (!) but I feel strongly that I should not compromise, even slightly, the land when it's in such a delicate state. I hiked a bit last weekend (on a semi-road) and watched a group tromp along a muddy path, walk off the path, and generally disregard the conditions. Not good (in my book anyway). Hope to hike with this group when the ground is solid again!

The situation has gotten so bad in the southern part of our system that many of our southern trails have been closed temporarily to protect them from damage.

Muddy Trail Closures on OSMP effective May 9, 2013 - Marshall Mesa, Greenbelt Plateau, Flatirons Vista and Doudy Draw
All trails in the Marshall Mesa, Greenbelt Plateau, Flatirons Vista and Doudy Draw areas are closed because of extremely muddy conditions. This includes: Marshall Valley, Marshall Mesa, Community Ditch (East & West), Cowdrey Draw, Mayhoffer-Singletree, Coal Seam, Flatirons Vista North & South, Prairie Vista, Doudy Draw, Spring Brook Loop (North & South), Fowler and Goshawk Ridge Trails. Trails will be reopened when conditions allow.

Participants who join us to hike on OSMP this weekend should prepare for mud. Recent rains have made many trails very wet and slippery. To avoid the mud, hikers have been stepping off the trail and walking around the muddy spots, which causes very significant damage to the trails, and also results in erosion.

If you join Lynne for this hike on Sunday, wear appropriate shoes and clothing to walk right through mud and puddles rather than stepping around them. This is essential to protect our trails.

Just a note that this is Mother's Day, and parking near Chautauqua is guaranteed to be difficult that weekend (Chautauqua serves an amazing brunch!).

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
