Hike Twin Peaks South Boulder(just opened!) and Bear

Let's do a foothill twin peak hike!

Starting at South Mesa trail head, heading north on Table Mesa to Shadow Canyon, up the chute to South Boulder then Bear Peaks then back down the same trail. Shadow Canyon is steep but shaded and there is some trail scrambling to reach Bear but it is not extreme.

South Boulder has been closed since last summer because of fire and erosion and just opened last week.

It's a moderate strenuous hike, you are rewarded with great views.

Bring water, snack, have a good pair of hiking shoes on. The Shadow Canyon chute is a steep climb so be in fairly good shape to do the hike. Meet-up is done in conjunction with Boulder New In Town and Boulder CHAOS.

Southern Sun or Under the Sun after.

Hope to see you there!

Weather, terrain and other people can put you in a situation where your knowledge and experience will be vital. If you are new to hiking please read up on mountaineering safety so you can rely on them in a tough situation. Also recommended is that you follow your organizers/hosts directions along with other experienced hikers

Dehydration, and fast-building storms are the most common problems. Be self sufficient, but in return ask questions.

Some unexpected car arranging this am means that I won't be hitting the trails til a little later. Sorry that I missed you. Hopefully I'll see you on the trail or catch you on the next hike. :-)

Sorry, I nearly forgot about a prior commitment. I hope to join y'all on a future hike in the evening or on the weekends.

I'm pretty sure I heard something about Shadow Canyon being closed for raptor habitat until the end of July. Anyone else heard that? Maybe I misread the trail description and that part will be avoided...

Ranger last week said it was open. It is still on as a hike unless your positive it's closed.

I was hiking up that way today and there were signs. I also looked it up online and it was updated the 20th that the area was closed. Sounds like you all talked to actual people and/or did the hike so Ill go with that

We will shuttle over from the broadway(93) and Eldorado lot to South Mesa trailhead. Please be there by 8:30 so we can shuttle over. Or you can meet us at trailhead at 9.

I'm afraid that I'll have to opt out of this hike. It will be hard to find parking for one car, let alone twenty. I'll do some other hike with this group. Sorry for the last minute change.

Coming! I found that SKIP will go to the trail head, so this is possible for me. Are we meeting 9am or 8:30am ?? How can we find each other when we're there?
    Thank you see you soon!

The weather reports says thunder storms starting from 10am till 1pm.. will that be a problem?

Can I bring a friend to this? Also, how long does this particular hike usually take? A couple of hours or half day?

To find Parking place at South Mesa traihead or the Dowdy Draw trailhead at 9:00 am on the weekends is almost impossible. I hiked South Boulder Peak last Sunday, and even at 8:30 am, both parking lots were full. I had to park half a mile down the road. You might want to meet in the parking lot at the intersection of Hwy 93 and Marshall road, the parking lot is on the north east corner, and then carpool from there. This is a fairly strenuous hike, especially the Shadow canyon chute, which is ~2300' elevation gain in ~2 miles. Good luck finding parking!

1'd suggest meeting at 8:00 am instead of 9 am to avoid parking problems. And, I think it will probably take more than 4 hours if we are planning to do both peaks.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
