June Book: Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum

We meet upstairs at Kevin Barry's (in the room that has a buffet preset for brunch/events). They have drinks and their full menu available during the discussion.

Please bring at least one discussion point or question for the group (so everyone gets to talk).

For fifty years, Anna Schlemmer has refused to talk about her life in Germany during World War II. Her daughter, Trudy, was only three when she and her mother were liberated by an American soldier and went to live with him in Minnesota. Trudy's sole evidence of the past is an old photograph: a family portrait showing Anna, Trudy, and a Nazi officer, the Obersturmfuhrer of Buchenwald.

Driven by the guilt of her heritage, Trudy, now a professor of German history, begins investigating the past and finally unearths the dramatic and heartbreaking truth of her mother's life.

Combining a passionate, doomed love story, a vivid evocation of life during the war, and a poignant mother/daughter drama, Those Who Save Us is a profound exploration of what we endure to survive and the legacy of shame.

NOTE: It is a week earlier than normal to avoid any conflict with the 4th of July.

It was a good meetup/discussion..I am still pondering some topics brought to light (like the misuse of military titles)..but indeed, I enjoyed the character development & storyline.

Thanks! Are you open to people meeting up outside the set date to discuss the book? This is the 2nd book I have finished & been unable to make the planned meetup:(

Hey! We discussed it tonight & we're thinking of planning an event to meet outside the book clubs (maybe quarterly). Sometimes with a connection to a book, sometimes not. We might do an exhibit this month that relates to this last book, so stay tuned! Good suggestion!

I really enjoyed the discussion tonight! Absolutely one that brought many different views to the table! If you didn't make it but read the book, I'm going to put up a discussion board to further discuss!

Great discussion--what a cool mix of people. I only wish I had read more of the book so that I could participate.

I have not had time to read this book in its entirety and I really want to finish it. As much as I desperately miss you guys and our great discussions, I don't want to spoil it!!! I am so torn!

I will do my best to cram. I am still at work now so you can see that my time devoted to reading has been sadly shortened lately…I really do miss you guys.

I can only get my reading in while on the elliptical, so I feel your pain!

Hey everyone! I've always been intrigued by the idea of a book discussion group, and I think I'll be able to make it on the 21st. I just joined, but I'll do my best to plow through the book in time. Any words of wisdom for a first-timer?

I also noticed that there are a ton of people who specifically mentioned being interested in meeting new people (as am I). Looking forward to seeing you there!

Think of a few topics, or a question, or even a scene that you want to discuss and that helps to keep the ball rolling! Hope you've enjoyed the book (and it is okay if you don't!) and hope to see you out on Friday!
