It's time again for the Boundary tech talks. Come for the pizza and beer. Stay for the knowledge.
7 - 7:30 Beer and Pizza
7:30 - 8:30 Killing the Cowboy: Lessons from a Pager (Jeff Hodges of caremad.com)
A smörgåsbord of stories of things done while keeping websites up, and how to learn more, faster. A walk-through of some great/horrible solutions to problems in production and a discusson of the lessons learned, the lessons that shouldn't have been learned, and the real lessons that took a little while longer to learn. With a probable inclusion of a small lecture on his caremad for cowboy engineers.
8:30 - 9:30 Hungy Hungry Kobayashi (Dietrich Featherston, Boundary)
Kobayashi is a riak-based platform we are building at Boundary to provide customers with long-to-medium term storage of the network data we collect and access to that data at interactive latencies. This talk covers the design and operational challenges involved in building a distributed data store capable of storing and analyzing the 18B recs/day processed by Boundary's infrastructure. We'll also look at the measurable differences in system behavior as course corrections were made along the way and how to get a great deal of mileage out riak by knowing which knobs to turn.
