We'll head out once again to hike and do trail maintenance on the brand new, limited-access trail at Western Kentucky University's Upper Green River Biological Preserve. Bring hand clippers if you have them as we will be cutting back overgrowth as we travel along.
To increase the educational opportunities at the preserve, they are developing a nature trail. A rough trail has been put in but is not yet finished. The trail includes steep slopes and loose footing, especially with leaves on the ground. At certain places we will basically be following flags through the forest. For this reason I have this trip listed as "difficult" and the distance is a rough estimate based on Google Earth images. Having said all that, I will tell you that I am very familiar with the area so there is no reason to fear for your life, just your ankles and your shins. :-)
Meeting time: 12:15 PM in Bowling Green (travel time to the preserve is 1 hour each way)
Distance: 6 miles ?
Estimated Time: 4 hours
Difficulty: difficult (rough cut trail)
Well behaved dogs are welcome - WKU-UGRBP has a strict leash law
The WKU Biopreserve is a 1000+ acre area purchased by the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund to preserve sensitive habitats while encouraging research, education, and conservation. You can read more about the preserve at http://greenriver.wku.edu/
People traveling from Bowling Green can meet up in the Fairview Shopping Center Parking lot at 12:15 PM to Carpool/ caravan up to the preserve. I will have maps at Fairview showing how to drive to the preserve. The preserve is gated so we will all enter (and leave) the area at the same time. If you live north of town and would like to meetup with the group near the preserve, send me an e-mail and we'll set up a meeting spot.
