New Years Resolution Hike

  • January 4, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • Mammoth Cave - Maple Spring Trailhead

Let's celebrate the new year by hiking the brand new (hopefully it will open before Jan 4)  Big Hollow Mountain Biking/ Hiking Trail at Mammoth Cave National Park.  The trail is mainly single track and has a stretch along a ridge above the Green River that should give us some spectacular views.

A special thanks to Southwest KyMBA for all of the trail work they have put in as the trail was being built.

Hike Stats

Meeting time: 10:00 AM (in Fairview shopping center in Bowling Green, 31-W and fairview road) 10:45 AM at the Maple Springs parking lot

Hike Distance: 10 miles

Estimated Hike Time: 5 hours

Difficulty: "Difficult" due to the distance.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.  Mammoth Cave has a strict leash law.  This trail will most likely have mountain bike traffic along it so if you dog does not do well with bicycles, you might want to keep them home for this one.

Nice day. Little muddy but who cares, kept me on my toes and jumping mud holes for 11.73 miles. Nice to see everyone and meet the new ones. Pretty darn good time, food and drinks at El Mazatlan later as well. LOL Laughed 'til I just about fell outta my chair at some of our conversations. :-)

Don't laugh, or maybe you should! I am coming in from Clarksville and I am geographically challenged. I do not know the area around Mammoth Cave, is there a GPS setting to find the parking lot where everyone is meeting? I am so looking forward to being outdoors, hope I can find ya all !

Kay, Probably the easiest thing to do would be to meet up with us in Bowling Green and catch a ride to the park. The shopping center is right on 68-80. If you want to meet us as the trail head parking lot, Google earth shows it as being at 37 degrees 12 minutes 21.06 seconds North and 86 degrees 08 minutes 20.29 seconds West.

oops, the shopping center is on 31-W and Fairview road, not[masked]

Hey Phil, we are meeting at the Fairview Ave "shopping center" here in BG at 10 am right?

    January 3, 2014

    • Phil

Yes, I left off the Fairview stuff this time because I was hoping to be up there mountain biking already. Anyone who wants to carpool from bowling Green, come to Fairview a little before 10. We'll head out at 10 for the park.

    As always?

We'll go ahead and give it the old college try tomorrow. As the trail warms up it may get a little slick. If so, we'll just stay on the edges of the trail where the leaves are. The ground in those areas should remain frozen. Be sure to wear warm clothes and boots, and bring some snacks and water. See you in the morning.

We arent actually doing any caves are we :)?

    January 3, 2014

    • Phil

No caves on this one but if you decide to visit Mammoth Cave on Monday, you'll definitely want to go into a cave. Brrrr

Thanks David, hopefully the mud will be frozen from the recent cold snap. Albeit, we have quite a warm up tomorrow to around 45 so who knows. See you on another hike.

Pulled out because my two hikes there have both involved a lot of mud. With the weather we have had and expecting, I'll wait for a dryer time. Y'all have fun.

If might be rough but I'm going to stick it out, need to condition for smokey trip in January....

Phil, looking forward to this hike. Hope the trail is open and weather permits. With such a great hiking resource virtually in our backyard, the club should have scheduled hikes in the Park every weekend during the winter months. When we finally meet maybe you can advise me on leading some hikes. Some of my Park hikes are way off the beaten path (and trails) and it's another world to see including secluded cemeteries, arches and the highest waterfall in KY.

Gary, talk to one of the rangers I know and the trail is open for hikers, looking forward to finally getting to hike it, thanks to all who worked on it to make it possible....

Working Fridays and Saturdays, but may be able to make a Sunday hike in the future, if I'm not too tired from work.

I am not going to be able to make this one, I have a buddy coming into town, I haven't seen him in 11 years, so yeah, looks like a fun hike though.

I hiked the north and south loop today and it was pretty nice. Because the trail is so new, a lot of it was very soft. Be prepared to get muddy

Good news! I was running at Mammoth Cave today and ran into a group of bikers. They said the new biking/hiking trail opened yesterday. So I assume our hike is definitely a go now.

They are serious hikers but not that serious to start at 10 PM... :) (At least I don't think so!)

Great ... you all are serious hikers! I love a bit of distance, finally I don't have to go alone! Thankful for this group! :)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
