Mammoth Cave - McCoy Hollow/ Wet Prong

This hike has been move from its original date of Saturday March 17.  Also the time has been changed so that people can take advantage of the Houchins Ferry which opens at 10:15 AM.

Join us for a more challenging hike at Mammoth Cave Park. We'll head out early to hike along the Wet Prong trail/McCoy Hollow trail on the east side of Houchins Ferry Road.

Hike Stats Meeting time: 9:30 AM at Fairview, 10:30 AM at Temple Hill Parking Lot

Hike Distance: about 10 miles

Estimated Hike Time: 5-6 hours

Difficulty: strenuous

Well behaved dogs are welcome -Mammoth Cave has a strict leash law.

People traveling from Bowling Green can meet up in the Fairview Shopping Center Parking lot at 9:30 AM to carpool/ caravan up to Mammoth Cave National Park.People travelling directly to the park can meet us at the Temple Hill parking lot on Houchins Ferry Road (On East side of the road near First Creek Lake) at 10:30 AM. This is where we will end the hike and we'll leave some vehicles in this lot. Next we'll carpool up to the parking area on Houchins Ferry Road on the north edge of the park (near ollie Rd) and start hiking south on Wet Prong. The trail will take us down to the Green River and back up to the Temple Hill parking lot (see link to map below). Be sure to wear appropriate cloths and boots with good ankle support. Bring plenty of water and a snack.

Important:  There are two to three stream crossings on the trail, last time we had to walk across in knee deep water.  Due to the depth of the water and the slippery rocks, it would be a good idea to bring some Crocs or something similar to put on when crossing the streams.

The description accurately represented the length and difficulty of the hike. Very enjoyable.

Really pretty, scenic hike. Many pretty streams and numerous rock faces with lots of wildflowers. Strenuous is a good description. Don't do it if you aren't in shape and used to hiking. NOT a trip for dogs that are not WELL behaved.

Looking at the weather, it seems that Sunday the 18th will be a much better day to hike. Please let me know if you would be able to make it that day instead.
