Looking Forward: Climate, Ecology, and Culture in a World of Change

Looking Forward: Climate, Ecology, and Culture in a World of Change Stephen Jackson,Director of the new DOI Southwest Climate Science Center will give lectures at both UM and MSU as part of the Institute on Ecosystems (IoE) Distinguished Visiting Lecturer Series.

MSU Bozeman, MT 7:00pm Wednesday, April 24th

Hager Auditorium, Museum of the Rockies

Dr. Jackson’s research employs tree-rings, fossil rodent-middens, and sediments from lakes and bogs to investigate how past climatic changes and human activities have affected species distributions, biodiversity, and ecosystem properties. His research provides baselines for gauging ongoing and future changes in ecological systems, and delivers case studies that reveal the complex dynamics of ecological response to environmental change and variability. Dr. Jackson’s work has implications for conservation policy, resource management and climate-change adaptation.  Link to event & FULL BIO here.

This was an interesting talk for a couple of reasons. One being that I used to work for the USGS and I wanted to hear the viewpoints of managers within the agency on this topic. The other being the direction of his talk. He brought up ideas and postulates that I had not thought of before. Some where more common sense, but perhaps are often not thought about in this world of doom and gloom. And the other was perhaps some positive postulates that can provide some hope in the near future and give us more time to solve this problem. I thought it was an interesting approach. Even with this, however, one of the questions from the audience provided him to give his true belief that the signs don't look good primarily because of the amount of greenhouse gases.
