MSU Extension Agents and Specialists face numerous issues regarding the environment, the economy, and the wellbeing of the audience they serve. Among them is Montana’s vulnerability to water shortages, extreme weather events, and increased fire frequency and pest outbreaks. Climate variability and its impact are at the core of these issues and, while scientists overwhelmingly endorse the evidences of global climate change, there is still a debate among Montana’s citizens on the extent and impact of this problem. This lack of communication between scientists and the general audience is one of the biggest roadblocks to address the issue of climate change predictions and impacts.

MSU Extension has a unique ability to serve as a communication bridge, but needs to acquire the required science-based knowledge and outreach skills to engage Extension specialist on this issue. To fill this gap, we propose a 3 hour session at the MSUE Annual Conference where Extension Agents and Specialists will dialog with climate change scientists, producers, and the Montana Director of Agriculture to brainstorm approaches to develop and deliver a science-based extension program addressing the needs of our citizens regarding climate change and impacts.

Please invite whoever you feel is appropriate and try to attend. A lot of attendees could make a big difference for the future of Climate Action at MSU Extension.
