Global Game Jam 2014

Chris Webster will be hosting our first ever BGD Game jam!

This jam will be apart of The Global Game Jam 2014

Game jams are a lot of fun and a great way to exercise your game creation skills

So come hang out and make some games whether you are an artist, musician, programmer, or designer, we'll need every discipline.

Just an FYI, we will be following GGJ rules including:

• Every Jammer must create an account and register with an official GGJ 2014 Jam Site at globalgamejam.org, which we can help you do at the meetup.

• All digital games and source code for all GGJ game projects must be uploaded to globalgamejam.org and released under the Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA). See also the FAQ.

Any questions feel free to ask Chris Webster or Ben Sauskojus

Please sign up for a Global Game Jam account by the end of Friday the 24th and then join our Jam here: http://globalgamejam.org/2014/jam-sites/bozeman-game-developers-ggj2014

    Hey all,
Who started the "Good to see you" button mashing... it reminds me of clicking "like" on facebook when someone has good news. Anyways, it was GOOD TO SEE ALL OF YOU. I had a blast for the limited time I was there.
The game looks good! I lol'd pretty good when I heard the reason that the bat is trying to get to the center of the Earth. I beat cave 1 and then I just kept dying. I didn't want to become batty, so I quit.

Tyson - awesome tutorial - that was pretty cool and I hope to make something with it.
Chris/Ben - thanks for organizing, broskis. It took a lot of effort, and I really appreciated getting to be a part of it.

Also, I left those wings in the Dino-Jet Fridge, so Chris, let your colleagues tear into them if they get hungee.

lol the Good to see you thing is just a nice way to keep in touch and it's a part of the meetup system. Sorry for the annoyance, you can unsubscribe from them or if everyone hates them I'll stop using them completely ;)

Hey guys I'd love to have copies of your photos of the event. So please email them or send me some links. Thanks

The source code for this project, in its completed entirety, is here: https://github.com/krytaxion/GGJ14-sonar

If you want to continue developing this game and have any questions about the code, feel free to ask. Again, great job everyone :D

Thanks Tyson I'll update the game page on GGJ site with this. :)

      January 27, 2014

    • Chris W.

Okay, repo linked on project page. I'll update the credits section next. If you want to post your full name and what things you helped with on the game that would be helpful. Example: Chris Webster - Voice Overs, 2D Texture Assets. I will link to your Meet up user unless you want a different contact to be used like twitter. (Which you should include if you want me to use it.)

  • Chris W.

Great learning experience. :-) Both on hosting an event as well as my ability to also join in on the activities at the same time.

    January 26, 2014

  • Tyson J.

Thanks again to everyone that participated in this event! It was great to have you all this weekend. What we did wouldn't have been possible without each of you!

Also, thanks again to Chris for setting this up, providing a place for us to work, and plenty of snacks. See you next time :)

I'll replace it when it's done uploading.

      January 26, 2014

    • Chris W.

Okay stuff is replaced. There's also some binaries uploaded on there I'll link them on that page when I get home. (I kinda want to get out of here. :D)

When are we starting this morning. Turns out I might be able to make it a little earlier.

    January 26, 2014

  • Chris W.

Heads up I am here for anyone wishing to join me.

    January 25, 2014

    • Ben S.

      On my way shortly

      January 25, 2014

  • Chris W.

Btw does anyone want to meet at my work tonight? Or is the hang out good for everyone?

    January 24, 2014

    • Chris W.

Okay... So... yeah I forgot about those people trying to get home. I'm home now and I'll start inviting people. :)

      January 24, 2014

    • Chris W.

Hey Taylor you need to have a Google+ account and then you need to join the link I'm about to email you. :)

      January 24, 2014

  • Taylor W.

As far as i know im good with that. How big of groups are we planning on doing? Like smaller groups or one big game for all of us?

    January 16, 2014

    • Tyson J.

Did we ever make a decision on this? At this point with the size of the group we have, I'm thinking either 2 groups of 4, or one group of 8. Thoughts?

      January 24, 2014

    • Ben S.

I'm thinking two groups. 8 people is a big team

      January 24, 2014

  • Tyson J.

I probably won't be able to make it the first day, promised my dad I'd go skiing with him. But definitely will be there day 2 to help out.

    January 15, 2014

    • Tyson J.

So it turns out I will be able to make it both days. So excited! Let's make some awesome games!

      2 · January 23, 2014

    • Chris W.

How excited are you Tyson?! http://i.minus.com/in... Are you Willem Dafoe excited?! (O.O)

      January 23, 2014

    Hi all,

I will probably be the "sound guy" for this jam, and I will be bringing a lot of props and recording equipment to the jam! I could go on freesound.org and find a bunch of stuff (it's all creative common licensed), but I thought it would be much more fun to actually record and give you guys 100% original assets to work with.

The reason I'm posting here is to ask anyone willing to bring some kind of "props" if they are able. For example, rubber mallets and rotten fruit are a very good combination :D, or anything that can click or clang together. Broken glass shards, metal buckets, things made of wood, pretty much any junk you have lying around and don't have a use for otherwise, probably has potential for interesting sounds.

Anyway, just an idea. See y'all this weekend!

    2 · January 22, 2014

    • Chris W.

You damn kids and your rotten hams! *shakes fist*

      January 23, 2014

    • Tyson J.

I'll see what I have laying around and throw it in my truck.

      January 23, 2014

  • Chris W.

Okay So time for this thing will be 10am to 8pm Saturday and Sunday. Friday will be after 5pm for anyone who can make it to a G+ meetup situation that's what I had planned for that. I'm moving the location from the bank where we normally meetup to my work in Belgrade. Dynojet Research. I've added it to the map thing. If you need help getting there or a ride or something let me know and I'll see what we can arrange.

    Questions? Concerns? :)

    January 18, 2014

    • Chris W.

I think the G+ Hangouts dealio I'll just start one on Friday and then post a link/information to it here around 4:30-5:00 range assuming I get everything I need to do done/tested. Then I'll either give you guys an address for the Keynote to watch, or I'll play it over G+ but it might be better to just have people go to the address and watch it there.

      January 22, 2014

    • Chris W.

So I think I'm going to try and do a test run of the G+ hangout tonight just to make sure my stuff works like I expect it to... If you want to join it let me know. :) (Shoot me an email through here or to chris_webster (at) yahoo.com and I'll add you to it.)

      January 23, 2014

  • Chris W.

I have the Keynote and the Theme in my possession and I'll be giving you guys the diversifiers some time either this afternoon or tomorrow morning so you can take some time and think about them and maybe tie them into an idea when you get the Theme on Friday. :)

    January 22, 2014

    • Ben S.

Rebels Learns it Better sounds pretty interesting

      January 23, 2014

    • Chris W.

That's like one of the mechanics of all the Easter eggs and what not in the Stanley Parable I think. :D

      January 23, 2014

  • Chris W.

Just to poll people would you rather start it at 10 AM on Saturday and Sunday or would you like the extra hour and start at 9 AM? I think that’s the only thing I would deviate from the official schedule over. :)

    January 16, 2014

    • Ben S.

I can't be there at 9am. Probably more like 11 for me.

      January 17, 2014

    • Taylor W.

yeah 10 on Saturday 11 on Sunday for me anyways.

      January 17, 2014

  • Chris W.

Okay, so here's the “official” schedule as far as I know it to exist... We can make some modifications to our liking. For one we are not doing a lock in event. We didn’t get the bank conference room for Friday afternoon so I would like to do those things over a G+ hangout. Anyone have concerns over/with that? The Keynote will be a livestream/video we all have to watch. Does anyone not have good enough internet or a lack of internet at home that that would be an issue? I can have a couple of people over to my place on that Friday if we need to. :)

    January 16, 2014

    • Tyson J.

Lock in? Like they seriously lock people in a room together for 48 hours and work all day and night?

      January 16, 2014

    • Chris W.

hehe most events like this are not a full lockin but yeah... that's how a few of them work. Normally the lockin ones are 24 hours. 48 hours is a bit extreme. The guy I talked to/had an interview with yesterday (Bill) said that his site goes the full 48 hours. If people need to leave they can but they are encouraged to run the deal the entire 48 hours. (O.O)

      January 16, 2014

  • Chris W.

Here's the link to sign up on the actual Jam Site. You'll need to be signed up on there by that Saturday:

    January 15, 2014

    • Chris W.
