Psychoactive Drugs and the Brain, from pleasure to pain

Addiction to Marijuana is dangerous, but addiction to sleeping pills is 'safe'. Using morphine to alleviate pain towards the end of one's life is moral, but to use opium to elate psychological pain is not. Pharmaceuticals can lobby legally, drug dealers do it illegally.

Drug research, at the core of neuroscience, seeks solutions for normalizing the unruly brains and behaviors; but how is the definition of normal mixed with politics, economics and ethics?

In this meeting, we will ask questions and share knowledge about drug (ab)use in relation to brain, self and society.

Besides your questions and personal/professional insights, please bring any books, essays or films on the topic that you wish us to read and analyze in the next event.

Thank you. It was a very interesting topic and I learned a lot. I particularly enjoyed learning about the scientific aspects in terms of the actual effects on receptors and the brain and specific areas as this relates directly to what I am now studying.

Hi all, thank you for your participation and the great discussion. Here's a recap http://www.meetup.com/Brain-Sel... looking forward to seeing you soon again. Alex, Viviane, thanks! We will definitely have more discussions on three topics that evolved from our discussions here. - Addiction
    - Neurobiology of Pain
    - Brain science and authority From the onset, the aim of this group has been to generate questions. I think what I like most about our group is that we finish each session by more questions than answers. In the process of asking, I think we learn a lot.

Thank you for the nice summary! As for policy, I always think the Dutch system is a good one (I may of course be somewhat biased). It has two aspects of note: a distinction between "soft" and "hard" drugs; and the official tolerance policy (gedoogbeleid) used by the ministry of justice that basically says "this is illegal, but within certain limits we allow you to be illegal." http://en.wikipedia.o...

Very interesting topic; with obviously much too little time to discuss. Well prepared, Naj set the stage very well

I think in the next meetings I will make sure everyone gets a chance to ask at least one question. :)

You are right Viviane, we started a bit late today. But we can continue a discussion here, as well. :)

Thanks Naj for the background presentation on the day's topic. It's a very large subject that I hope we can revisit.

I am sorry, but I have to miss out on this meeting, even though I was looking forward to it. I have put out my back this weekend, and I have to limit my movements for the next few days, in essence, so that I don't have to be reliant on too many drugs!!!

Sorry to hear that, Valerie. Take a good rest and see you next time.
