Phoenix Island and Intelligence: How a Previously Unpublished Novelist Landed a Two-Book Deal and a TV Series

For nearly two decades, John Dixon taught language arts at Springton Lake Middle School in Media, Pa, during which time he published thirty-some stories and began working on novels. Now, John is a full-time novelist and a consultant for ABC Studios. His YA thriller Phoenix Island (Simon & Schuster) inspired the new CBS hit TV series Intelligence, which appears on CBS at 10 pm on Monday nights and stars Josh Holloway, Marg Helgenberger, and Megan Ory.

Although meetings officially start at 7:00 pm, many of us show up early to have a meal and catch up with each other. You can also order food and drink (on your own tab) throughout the meeting. The program generally lasts approximately 75 minutes. However, people stay as long as they like after the official program and we sometimes close the place.

Officers of the group are currently:

Mark A.R. Mitchell - President

James Breslin - Vice President

Jurgen Flood - Treasurer

Wayne A. "Tony" Conaway - Publicity

[OPEN] - Secretary

Gary Zenker - PR Advertising and Meetup Administrator

Dick Lolla - Web Site Administrator

Please check the event schedule for information on the programs and for additional meeting content and locations. You can find additional information on our Facebook page and on our web site: www.bvwg.org.

Great presentation! It was refreshing to hear a true success story, along with gaining knowledge from his experience.

Your path to this point took a great deal of guts. The reason you quit teaching also speaks to your character and honest.

I've seen John present three times, and each has been a delight full of personal insights and practical information. Great guy, wonderful content!

I loved to hear his story! Very inspirational, albeit unrealistic to think it could happen to me.

If you set your intentions, Chris, and believe that it will happen to you...then it will happen to you.

Oh Cass, I've done more intentions and visualizations than you can imagine! My second book is about my journey with the Law of Attraction, etc. Lots of rejections :( Moving on!

John and BVWG, thanks so much for a great learning experience. John shared with us as a friend of those who may be going through similar struggles and commitments to the craft. He reached deep and came up with a bounty of information and heart. Thank you, John! I read the first chapter of your book as soon as I got home--so well written and chilling, especially as you added the note in your talk about "kids for cash"--a story which caught my attention enough to make some notes about a horrifying story which needs to be uncovered even more. Looking forward to the rest!

My sincere thanks to the BVWG and John Dixon for an excellent evening last night. I am filled with inspiration and have been educated from John's real, on the ground training...from one who has "been there, done that" and sincerely earned the right to his success through years of dedication to the writing field. Kudos, to you, John, for keeping it real for all of us.

This was an excellent evening. I have heard John tell his amazing story with emphasis on journey and process, but this time he went into new details about interactions with agents, editors, publishers, and who weighs in on what once your book is out of your hands. He shared great info on contracts, editing and necessary rewrites for publishers to "break out" your book. Great Meetup!

First time at one of our meetings? Bring quarters for the parking meter, or park a few blocks away in a lot - and be sure to say hello when you come in! John Dixon is an excellent speaker and has the kind of writing success story we all dream about. This will be a great choice for your first meeting!
